I think I've noted here before, that when the subject of CBC funding comes up, the CBC-haters tend to be the people for whom "CBC" = "CBC Television" while the people who view it as sacrosanct are the people who think of "The CBC" as being Radio 1.

I think I'll listen to some Vinyl Cafe tonight as I fall asleep in the bed that my girlfriend and I bought brand new when we moved into our house. It was the first new thing we'd bought together, both of us out in the world for the first time, and even though it took a couple months to save up for it, it felt good going down to Sears and picking it up. We felt like... adults, and as we tied it down to the old Chev Cavilier, a car I'd bought from a friend for a few bucks and a prayer, we sang on the way home. It wasn't until we got home and started to put the bed together in our little bedroom that things went wrong...

I don't think I've heard the radio for a good 15 years or so, feel like I'm missing out on something now. No car trip I take is over 5 min so I've never really bothered to test out the radio.

Radio is a perfectly fine medium, it's just that the private sector has to make the absolute worst out of everything it can get its hands on

they call themselves "reporters", cry "assault" for a week because some rando nudged their camera, plead that they're being "silenced" by "sharia law" and "political correctness". but they applaud the beating and summary arrest of other journalists by armed agents of the state

Also, for what it's worth, the SRC produces some pretty good television content on the franco side of the CBC. Defund the CBC and reassign funds to SRC, obviously.

What's the odds that Levant has ever read the Qu'ran? I have in translation, and while I'm not a particular fan of many of the things it says, I don't think it's an instrument of terror. At least no more than the Old Testament.

PT6A posted:At this point it's mainly just amazing that broadcast radio as a medium is outliving anyone currently known as a radio personality, I mean who the gently caress even listens to radio? Most radio shows now are available as podcasts so I think radio's managed to retain a lot of people that way. You can listen to what sounds interesting after broadcast and there's enough content out there that it's pretty difficult to run out, although quality is all over the place.

Helsing posted:This was a thoughtful post and I salute you for making it. But it also sort of talks past my concerns. I don't in any way question the suffering of subaltern groups or the merits of cultivating trust and mutual understanding over time. But at the end of the day it's still not clear to me how the majority of the contemporary left would actually translate confrontation into a meaningful political victory on the scale of victories won in the past when institutions like government funded healthcare or pensions or worker safety regulations were developed. For what it's worth, I realised before hitting post that I hadn't really responded specifically to you so much as the topic in general. And I wasn't trying to imply you were being dismissive. I don't know if I have some pithy retort or meaningful response I can roll off my fingers with ease. I agree the left has spent a lot of time on an inward-focused pursuit of ideological perfection while the imperfect world hurtles by us out of control. You mentioned the French poststructuralists and I still have a knotted-up idea in my head I need to untangle regarding them and will turn it into a post when I manage to. Maybe this weekend. Also, Helsing: Don't stop effort posting, you old so and so. If you ever start a blog, tell this thread. Stickarts fucked around with this message at 03:53 on Feb 16, 2017 |
