Is the D&D china thread 100% serious? I keep imagining the "CHINA BY 2020" and "now it's china's turn! this is historically inevitable and also about fairness" people are mocking chinese propaganda but they seem maybe entirely sincere?

It's not terrible but there are a couple of posters who are exactly like that including one who wants China to rule the world purely because they hate white people (he is also on record as referring to SE asians as "jungle asians")

Nobody takes him seriously though

Edit: Also ran into the "west did x in 19th century so it is okay for china to do x now" argument

D&D has a tendency to live and die by official statistics and we are dealing with a national government/culture that commits deep level fraud at the drop a hat. They probably just believe most of the poo poo that is self reported by China (or re-reported by gullible westerners).

Nobody who hasn't spent time in China really knows anything about it and nobody who has has a good opinion of the place, unless they are crazy or have something wrong with them.

I've never subjected myself to the autistic idiocy of the D&D China thread but I can imagine.

For quite a while D&D had mods that would give out long probations or bans for posting things they disagreed with, but Great Helmsman lowtax purged them and now its safe for goons again.

it has nothing to do with my neighbours and peers, who are genuinely all good people and i have no plans to move or leave for the foreseeable future. i brought that up mostly to dispel the idea that i believe what i believe due to a lack of worldly exposure to what i am talking about (although again i have never been to mainland china so maybe some stuff 'ought to be taken with a grain of salt)

what turned me bitter was actually learning things about china from people who are chinese/have been to china/are academic china specialists which fairly quickly dispelled me of the notion that the exotic east is where the future is and most of that came from the university

i asked a chinese history professor what he thought about the idea of china being a superpower and he laughed at me and told me that china is a ticking time bomb that would lose a war with japan by itself

i find china fascinating and i generally like it, only because i view it daily through a sociological lens, and it is absolutely enthralling in that mindset. the food is great, the people that you're friends with are genuinely the sweetest in the world, and there's just an energy around everything all the time that is different than any place i lived in the united states, or anywhere else in the world. for that, i generally like it.

it does have its problems, though. which of course are well documented in these threads, and in other nefarious places on the internet.

Some of my favorite people I've known have been Chinese people, it's still an objectively terrible soul-crushing place though, and my response to it is to feel sorry for my Chinese friends.

so what's the deal with this article

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-02-15/from-made-in-china-to-made-by-china-for-china

quote:

China remains the biggest manufacturer on the planet, but most of what it makes stays at home and the vast majority of what it consumes is made there, too.

These twin facts could confound any Donald Trump-led trade assault, according to Diana Choyleva, London-based chief economist at Enodo Economics.

Of course, China remains deeply knitted into the global supply chain. "But the bulk of the value added is actually destined for China’s domestic market rather than abroad," Choyleva wrote in a recent note.

In fact, in 2011 less than a quarter of total domestic valued added by China's manufacturing sector was bound for foreign markets, down by 5 percentage points since 2008, according to the most recent data available from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. To be sure, some sectors still rely heavily on foreign demand, including electronics, textiles and apparel. But most don't.

This seems to, uh, be a complete reversal of conventional wisdom and the fact that this is a podunk article on bloomberg combined with Fojar's Law sets off my BS detector but I don't know in what way

oohhboy

I am not surprised as every country's domestic consumption is greater than it's exports.

What you really need to look at are the absolute values as statistics like that can be manipulated easily. The article is pretty rubbish as it contains a graph with hosed up use if axis, gently caress all useful units, relative to what?!. The rest of the article is full of empty assertions that doesn't have any relative numbers to cite and what number it does push out is propaganda about some future plan and growth from the CCP.

The "Source" article might be better but it doesn't seem to link it.

It's "China rising" bullshit. Disregard.

I post and read about China here on gbs something awful dot com chinar thread because its like a weird Vietnam vet thing of you can't honeslty connect and talk the positives and negatives about China to someone who wasn't there.

They can have opinions of course ranging from informed to armchair strageyist bookstore. Its just they won't get the energy of the place, to the the people doing time in prison waiting to escape feeling, to the streetshitting granny screaming HALLO, so you don't talk about it with friends and family. But when you get someone who has been there its cathartic because you can go I saw a mountain of offo bikes collapse onto the baoan and people gathered to look for 30 minutes and get a I know back..

Well, don't forget that life has improved significantly for a lot of the population (the urban one mainly) but there's still hundreds of millions of people in grinding rural poverty who ain't consuming poo poo. Urban and rural China are different planets.

A lot of the people who have money also try their damndest not to buy anything Chinese. They don't have the nationalist I ONLY BUY DOMESTIC thing you see in Korea--they know Chinese made is garbage and import everything they can. So you have a weird situation where the top and bottom levels aren't buying anything, it's just the... lower middle class I guess? People with enough money to consume but not enough to buy everything from Japan.
