The US nuclear sub arsenal literally did not work after the first series of PAL countermeasures to prevent accidental detonation were introduced. There was a strip inside of US nuclear missiles that prevented fast neutron reactions and they found out after about 5 years of being in place that whoops the plutonium caused it to deteriorate and when the motors to remove it engaged it would break inside the missile and render it inoperable.

So it's really not without precedent (see also war of the worlds and germs)

Seriously an XCOM spinoff with absolutely gigantic terror tripods (that were less easy to kill than sectopods) would be good fun

Long War 2 should have put in the Julian Boss Mech as a standard late-game enemy.

This guy's thoughts echo most of my own, it's a good game conversion but way too much of the strategy layer's essentials depend on watching videos of people who either worked on the game or looked at all the files to figure out how systems interact.

LW2 makes for some intense missions sometimes. I had a jailbreak mission where I successfully snuck into the prison building, but got surrounded once I hacked the doors. The evac was across the street on top of another building, but there were so many enemies I had to camp the squad inside the jail, suppressing and overwatching the incoming aliens. My ranger got up on top of the roof and started blasting fools through the skylight. Meanwhile my shinobi snuck out the back and came up on the enemy's flank, I think she singlehandedly killed 6 or 7 advent with her sword. Finally I cleared up enough of them to make a break for the evac (after using both charges of my officer ability to extend the timer). The squad headed out into the street, chucking smoke and suppressing as they went. With even more reinforcements pouring in from down the street, I managed to evac everyone on the last possible turn.

the members of that squad all have matching tattoos now.

Also had a similar tight mission last night which was a VIP Assassination. Only managed to pull it off due to a clutch flamethrower from my heavily wounded Tactical. She snuck around the back of the gene clinic and up the stairs to burn the VIP, 2 vipers and a sectoid all at once. If even one of those enemies hadn't caught on fire I probably would have lost somebody.

Beat the (base) game on Ironman Veteran. :patriot: Hulk Hogan fired the final shots with a Rapid Fire burst to the face of the last Avatar, and ended up with over 100 kills in the campaign. Very excellent game, it pretty much improved on every single aspect from XCOM 1.

Okayish ending, people have speculated on the TFTD sequel being hinted heavily at. Although when the Elders refer to "It has chased/followed us, it will do the same to you" you have to wonder what "it" is and why it would be under the ocean.

I also wish they would use increased pod sizes in any place, other than just the final mission. Maybe they do on harder difficulties.

Ahh, the classic example of "Jake, fix your game".

My sniper can see a Sectoid, has a 51% shot on it. I want a better shot, so I blow up its cover with my grenadier (killing another dude in the process).

Sniper can no longer see the Sectoid. :xcom:

EDIT: Save/reload on a hunch. Suddenly sniper can see the thing... but wait, it still says he has low cover... check the dude I just moved who was flanking before the save/reload. Dude is no longer flanking it. Cover is still gone, neither dude has moved. Fix your loving game, Jake.

This is relatively common. Units in cover step out, so they're visible to anyone who can see the adjacent tile.

Blow up the cover, they stop stepping out, so units who could only see the adjacent tile but not the tile they're actually on lose vision.

And then, because A Better ADVENT (I dropped Long War), the last enemy on the map is a Gunslinger, who uses his last move to hit three out of three targets with Faceoff, killing one of them, and panicking two soldiers.

All three were behind full cover. :xcom:

I managed to recover from a near-wipe on the Blacksite mission and losing a fair few soldiers before that. I've not won yet but I'm 35 missions in and doing alright. I use two wipes in a row or three failed missions in a row as my prompt to restart, unless it's something dumb like my last extraction where I managed to get my team through without a scratch and a bunch of promotions but didn't move the VIP to the evac in time :downs:

So if the "Current Enemy Activity" is extremely light there is no difference between 100% infiltration and 200% right? Since it can't go lower? Or does it affect other things too?

Nordick
Sep 3, 2011

Yes.
It can still affect the enemies' alertness level so they're easier to sneak around, and can shorten the evac timer.

Skyranger evac arrives 1 turn faster if you're at 150%, and 2 turns if you're at 200%.
Infiltration also affects detection range somewhat - if 1 is normal at 100%, then it'll be increased to 1.25 at 0%, and reduced to 5/6th(0.83) normal at 200%

I had a LW2 prison break mission where the prison was connected to a disco :psyduck: Turns out it wasn't a good idea since we broke in through the disco, got everyone out, and escaped only getting spotted just before everyone evac'd out. (Opening the door to the prison lost concealment, but no pods were nearby to activate.)

Also due to a bug placing a prisoner inside an object, I got to explain saying "I somehow managed to surgically grenade him out of the toilet"

Re: Doom Ticker Timer - Just to clarify, is there a single 20-dayish time? So every time some of its days are used up, it is not replenished and the next time the ticker hits, it will just have whatever you have left?

Or is there a minimum number of days that the doom ticker timer will always have?

I had less than 50% infiltrated; I figured if I could get a high vantage point I should be able to hack into the crate with my specialist and then gently caress off. I spent the next 8 turns on top of a roof of a gas station either shieldwalled, hacking a surveillance drone, or under cover a smoke grenade. Got shot by an officer once, got zapped by a stun lancer twice. The surveillance drone saved my rear end before it died because it stunned anything close to me.

Again, if things haven't changed the doom timer will add time the longer you don't hit it, so it will default to 7 days then tick up from there the longer you are not in doom clock mode.

I'm at a loss for what to do here. No matter what I do, no matter how many .ini tweaks or guides I follow, I can not get this game to stop stuttering. I've got an i7-6700, 16GB RAM, and a 1060 with the latest drivers (378.66). It loads up fine but once I get to the main menu I'm showing 1 fps and it only renders maybe one frame every 4-5 seconds. Occasionally it will show 30-40 fps, and then drop down to single digits immediately after. Anyone run into something similar and maybe have a solution? I was so excited to be able to play this game again and this is breaking my heart :sigh:
