Flames signed Mark Bartkowski to a 2 way deal, I'm hoping it's as insurance policy so they can trade Wideman and call up Andersson or Kylington. gently caress Dennis Wideman.

I'm aware he stinks but if signing him helps them jettison Wideman it's a good move. That said Wideman's been so atrocious in the limited action I've seen the Flames in this year, I'd be shocked if we got anything other than future considerations. I'd still take that, though. Between what he did to that ref and how poor his play's been the last 2 seasons, I'm more than ready to see him loving gone. Somebody on the Flames FB page suggested it's a pickup to allow them to protect players they like and unprotect him, that'd be okay too. Bartkowski is, on a good day, a viable 7th defenseman. That is the nicest thing I'll say about him. I remember he got in a fight with Foligno when he was on the Bruins (not even the good Foligno) and he got his rear end beat.

Speaking of the fat man - Jankowski is having a pretty good first pro season, with 31 in 40 (after a faster start he's slowed down a bit). He's not gonna be viewed as the best player in the 2012 draft in 2022, but he certainly isn't looking like too bad of a pick for where they got him, and the slow entry to the league should at least make him cap friendly as a productive NHLer. That draft was pretty bad for forwards. It's not a bad strategy to take late bloomers / committed college guys after the "sure thing" top ~10, but it's pretty risky for a GM who can't count on being there four or five years down the road when the picks pay dividends.

So apparently according to Friedman the pens may be in on duchene or landeskog and may send maatta back? I'm not sure how I feel about adding that kind of cap hit, but with how hurt our forwards are i can see why jr may be kicking tires. I also wonder about shattenkirk too, but I dunno if the pens would target him. To be honest I can see the pens having a slow deadline, they kept everyone from last year and don't really have cap space. E: and lol if you don't think that JR won't buy out MAF if it comes down to it

What's more questionable to me is whether the Avs would accept a trade from the Pens. Surely another team can offer better than Maatta + first or whatever. It would own all the bones to have Duchene though. They could use him on wing this year and then let Bones go in the off season depending on what he wants and use Duchene as 3c instead. He'd be so perfect for our tard hockey skating system too. e: Lando would be fine too but Duchene is more intriguing for me

Couldn't the Pens pretty easily afford either of them with Kunitz/MAF coming out? They could probably still fit Schultz in, too. I mean Maatta/1st is poo poo value but it's Colorado so

He's currently the leading scorer on his AHL team. The advantage of taking the college guys is that they don't get the stink of failure on them before their first real kick at the can in the NHL. Other guys who were in similar situations: Anders Lee, Chris Kunitz, RJ Umberger, and many others.

That's to say nothing of presumably shipping out Maf as well. The issue is having to pay Schultz. Prospects-wise Cullen should be replaceable by Sundqvist who is having a fantastic season in the AHL, and Kuhnhackl has been mostly a healthy scratch this year but is capable of playing fourth line minutes and doing okay. So the Pens won't necessarily go out and have to spend a lot of money to bring in replacements. e: They may lose an additional 4 million from Vegas claiming Hagelin as well.
