You don't want a plague ship garnering that kind of focused attention, but like the poster up thread had questioned: How much attention would it's new trajectory garner anyways?

Accretionist posted:You don't want a plague ship garnering that kind of focused attention, but like the poster up thread had questioned: How much attention would it's new trajectory garner anyways? I can't imagine it not getting a ton of attention. If it moved slightly on its own maybe it could have gone unnoticed except for being a scientific oddity, but the Nauvoo is too famous to go unnoticed. It's probably the single greatest human endeavor to date and it was stolen and put on a suicide trajectory with an inanimate rock which somehow dodged at the last minute. In the episode they say Earth and Mars had ships en route to investigate and who were presumably tracking both objects.

Yeah, and everyone was probably watching already because the Navuoo launching would be a pretty drat big deal and it's not like there's a way to hide that they tried ramming it into Eros. They're playing loose with the timeframes involved but it's also at least a couple hours to a day or so for the thing to go from Tycho to Eros.

Based on the entirety of the Erasmus scenes, I think they're full of poo poo. I don't think they were really a med team at all. It sure won't change the fact that (even if I'm right) Holden and crew won't know it. Regardless, the Rocinante is still pretty incognito. If med team goes out and tells the world that there's this fake Martian spaceship flying around threatening to kill them and gently caress with Eros: that's bad news. Even worse if said med team was legit and tells the world 'Hey there's this super disease going around' without knowing what Johnson and Rocinante crew knows. It'd be hard to catch up to the Nauvoo, wouldn't it? I think we can assume she accelerated the entire way to Eros, and is probably still accelerating as she missed. So, good luck getting your ship back, Mormnos. She's going to a new sun.

I think they were something like the next-level version of old Vice journalists: college students with trust funds who blow their parents unlimited money to go to stupidly dangerous places for whatever 'good of humanity'/'raising awareness' reason. What makes the scene so compelling is that both sides do the right thing. The med team, thinking the protomolecule is a Martian weapon, do the right thing and try to warn the rest of the system. The Roci crew, knowing what's actually going on and that they've got the situation under control (oops), do the right thing by killing them in order to stop them from potentially spreading the protomolecule. It's brutal poo poo.

Just means it's going to maybe carry on through the town for a bit. The Nauvoo was just going to crash into Eros to knock it into the Sun, instead it'll just go through the inner solar system I guess and then there's the entire other half of the solar system with various ships, planets, and rocks out there. I assume they also have some kind of remote control of the thing, so just upload new coordinates and rendezvous somewhere. book stuff: Was the original plan to crash into Eros? I thought I remembered the plan being to do it more tugboat style and steer Eros into the sun with the Nauvoo's enormous drives.

I was legit worried they were going to kill off Miller and the show was going to lose pretty much the best character. Favorite Miller quotes so far: "We need these scientists alive guys!" "Yeah, I did, I killed the mad scientist." "Fred's geeks crunched all the numbers, velocity, speed, angle, all that crap" So many more... basically every line he delivers is awesome. Him and Amos are the dual badasses leading this rag tag group, I love it.

Not only accelerated the whole way, but seemingly accelerated at speeds humans couldn't handle. In the Expanse books they talk about how humans can take ~4Gs of sustained acceleration with the drug cocktails they have and be ok for some small number of hours, but it basically destroys your body. In the short story that pre-dates the Expanse books, it talks about how the first Epstein drive ever invented could sustain 7+Gs for more than long enough to kill you. Who knows how much thrust an Epstein drive could provide with 100 years of technological refinement.

Torpedoes, which are basically just Epstein drives without a ship attached, can manage something like 20g.

Yeah, they could very well have programmed the acceleration to cut shortly after the billiards style bank-shot. Then it's entirely ballistic and can be overtaken.

The fastest given book acceleration I can recall anyone actually doing is Alex doing 11 or 12g briefly in the Razorback. 8-9g is the more typical briefly sustained OH poo poo WE'RE ABOUT TO DIE speed in the Rocinante.
