Long time Tohaa player with some questions for the community at large.... I got into Tohaa back before Rasail Boarding teams came out and all that, and while they were still strong, they didn't have quite all the crazy tools they have now. Well since then, with awesome dudes like the Rasail, Kosuil, Sukeul, etc. it kinda feels like they've gone from strong, to drat near unbeatable. Now listen, I love my aliens, but lately I'm starting to agree with my play group when they say that at times, Tohaa feel frankly, a little unbalanced. I write because I want to keep playing Tohaa, but I also want to keep games competitive and fun for everyone. What kind of advice can I forward to them when it comes to things like the following?

- Tohaa links are so good. If anyone else wants to take a badass HI in a link they have to pay for like, 40 point cheerleaders, but I get the advantage of filling the link with handy utility dudes (Makaul, specialist, etc.) to give that extra burst while being cheap and good at hiding.
- Symbiont armor is also amazing. On my active turn I can go into just about any firefight with confidence. Worst case scenario I take a wound and drop my symbiont armor. For most other people, their worst case is they take a wound and die :/
- We seem to be getting extremely effective, well-priced units lately. Things like the Rasail, basically 3 wounds, always in cover, AND A BUDDY!? for a bargain. Sekeul, which is like, everything you want in a link gunner, for a bargain too.

I'm sure there are other inherent issues that make playing against Tohaa unfun. I'm just wondering what other groups experiences are like. Do you find this to be the case too? Can anyone recommend shifts in the way we play that can help balance these issues? Things like more terrain, less terrain, more saturation zones, harder to get to objectives, easier to get to objectives, etc.? I know that's hard to answer without having a baseline for what our meta's like, but still might help. Or like, should things like Mutts and E/M and template weapons be way more prevalent when fighting me?? Anyway thanks, sick of feeling like I'm playing with a handicap xD

I've found tohaa hard to play against if they're handled well, but quite fragile if a few key units drop. I certainly wouldn't classify them as unfair.

The only thing they have that's sus is the symbiomate. On an ectros its giving them a 4th wound that is not only lower risk than a normal wound, but can soak all damage in an order. While not invincible, it just seems a bit over the top.

Agreed, the biggest thing that is imbalanced is the symbiomate. They severely need tuned down.

Well, especially since they come on a CoC model. Makes it way too easy to take an aggressive symbio Lt with a mate and not worry about consequences :/

Honestly, I think it is hard to tell with Tohaa if they really are a bit much.

They might be, but as an alien faction they don't play standard Infinity, and it creates a situation where Tohaa players get a lot of practice playing against standard Infinity while non-Tohaa players usually don't get a proportional amount of experience playing against Tohaa Infinity. The human factions are different, but they usually play in a fundamentally similar way.

I'm Melbourne based as well. I don't often go to Ringwood since I live pretty central, but I believe House of War runs some casual 200pt tournies that I want to hit up. Ones next week I believe.

Shoot me a message if you'd like a game sometime though.

Has anyone seen any good Shikami proxies or conversions?

I was thinking of making one with one of the CCW Domaru (the middle ones)

and one of the Puppetswar samurai heads.

I'll also do some arm re-positioning and maybe add a greenstuff Shinobu scarf or something.
Thoughts?
Advice?

Those heads are scaled for warhammer 40k and would be massively overzised for an infinity mini.

Honestly, those Domaru would make a totally fine Shikami for me. Just paint it in some unique and extraordinary fashion, and that'd be great.

EDIT: That second one, especially. Give him a really striking red color or something, maybe freehand a monster face on him.

Yeah I was in today and a very nice bloke was telling me about his old HaqqIslam army he left on the train and advising me on the good things to get. Sitting on a boarding shotgun Fiday and a box set of Djanbazan, they were out of Naffatuns , and then I'm picking up the Red Veil set off a Kind Goon, which will hopefully keep me in metal action dollies for a while.

Any opinions on the different neoprene mats out their suitable for Infinity? I think the mats with city streets look a little more natural but seem like they might get weird with objective placement sometimes, or be fairly static in layout if you place terrain around the streets every time.

I bought the Quarantine mat from gamemat.eu and I have busses/trams and metal sheet fences to block the streets if I want to

Any mat is better than no mat. Even a green grass one works fine IMO. FLGSs have some of the city ones, rarely does anyone bother to actually line up buildings and streets. It can look extra cool, but I don't really notice once the game starts really.

Bare/painted wood sucks, things slip around too easy. One store has this nasty astroturf that just makes your hands/arms hurt after a few minutes. Thankfully they don't run infinity,

If I'm honest, not the kind of list that really scares me. Vanilla CA can be an awesome army, but why not just take maybe 2 of those terrifying models (probably the charontid, maybe the speculo as well?) and just change the rest in for max AVA of imetrons and ikadrons, with some daturazi, so you can have more orders, smoke-shoot the charontid and control more of the board?

Flipswitch

Because I play the order heavy type of list already in our ITS events and I'm trying smaller lists :)

I have one. The tile divisions are very visible so if you're not 100% ok with premeasuring it might but the hell out of you. And they really need some extra tiles for variety/if you wanna avoid placing buildings on roads.
Apart from that, they're nice thick mousepad mats.
