The chances of me ever picking up any new oWoD material was always pretty slim. Maybe some werewolf or vampire stuff for nostalgia's sake (I used to run LARPs in the Cam, and wrote a few books for their MET line.) But hiring Zak S for this brings the chance from slim to none. Very disappointing. Question for the clueless: Who is Swedish Dracula, and more importantly why?

I just saw a nice article about the new games on Kotaku. I sent them an email about Zack S, not sure what it will do. For all the complaints people have about them it's usually because they are on the other side of poo poo like this. I'm just assuming they don't know crap about the rpg community and they're just excited to see anything that is a WoD video game.

It's funny because as someone who had a friend con them into attending a few WoD LARP sessions (Like the fool I was, I introduced a very gothy friend that was into DnD to VtM: Bloodlines. Things went downhill from there as he got into the books and then eventually insisted i'd totally enjoy this new hobby he had recently discovered!) when I was a teenager I can say that a fair number of these LARP's are probably being attended by people using them as an excuse to hook up with each other. Presumably the average age for that stuff has just increased since then. So at least he's being honest about the expectations if you show up. It's also a hobby with some pretty messed up people in it, so no surprise about the whole "No means yes!" crap. There's even a thread about it somewhere on the forums. While it's not a definite thing LARPing can be a hive of weird drama, mental health issues, incestuous relationships that can be disturbingly toxic in nature, and generally just bullshit that I identified straight off at the group I was introduced too, prompting me to cackle like a lunatic at my (former, he took it way too seriously) friend for buying into it before promptly fleeing in the other direction from the whole affair with a note to call me if he needed a ride home. Knowing all that I can't look at Swedish Dracula as anything but trying to relive the glory days of his nerdery. Or just get some faux vampire poon by any means possible. I just e-mailed himself with the fact that I'm boycotting Paradox, and as to why. If you do e-mail him, try and remain factual and civil, of course. It's a hell of a lot less kitsch too, and the books even occasionally double as good reading as far as novella's go. They've started to pick up on this and the last big release was basically nothing but in character info dumps with an appendix explaining things out of character at the end. Also like the thread said like 50-100 pages back, the two novels written by Greg Stolze are actually pretty good reading on their own merits and a good intro to the way characters act in the setting. Which is something else it has over VtM. I forget which it was, but there's a reason why either OPP or WW grudgingly admitted that VTR was the better game way back when this takeover occurred. Yeah, having been a Storyteller at two White Wolf LARPs, I have to say the only way to have a good LARP is to have a closed invite list of people in the community you know are cool. And always make it 18 and up. I had serious issues with PUAs (one even tried to "bribe" me with a hookup offer, and another led to outright stalking of a player) and finally a legitimate pedophile (who was a local LARP organizer) who was victimizing teenagers at a game I attended. And you also just have a gaggle of posers, egomaniacs, and wannabe neo-nazi satanist edgelords. Hopefully poo poo has changed in the community since I was part of it over a decade ago but it can draw out the absolute worst people in the RPG community. That's not to paint every game and every session I played in with a brush - I had a lot of fun at times - but seeing the damage done was too much for me in the long run. About the best game I was involved with was, as mentioned, a closed one. Later ones (run by friends) were open and 18-and-up, as frustrating as it was to shun perfectly fine teens getting into the RPG hobby, we no longer had trust in people anymore. In any case, an open door is essentially an invite to shitlords and sex offenders in my experience.

It's kind of hard to make the issues seem important when all I can point to are blog posts claiming stuff happened that requires deep reading to understand. A good written part before getting to the tumblr ans wordpress links seems like a good idea.
