I went to see an E39 M5 someone had listed for $15k with a "cash in hand" policy. I explained to him over email when setting it up that I wasn't going to show up with cash and the first thing he asked me was "did you bring the cash". So I just assumed most posters were actually serious about it at opposed to a time-waster filter.

I was actually that guy on the 968 I just bought. There were 3 tiny pictures of the outside and a two sentence description and after 3 exchanges i overnighted him a cashier's check. I'll report back when it gets here Friday :ohdear:

This. I've dealt with so many sales on CL I can almost always tell who's bullshit and who's not, the key is email only. If you can't communicate via email then you're an idiot and I don't want your business. After I have determined that you can use email and communicate like a normal person, and aren't lowballing me or asking me stupid questions, then I will give my cell number and we can text to make things easier. Works every time. I just sold a bunch of car parts to three different people and it went smoothly. The last two cars I sold, the first people to show up and see the cars in person bought them because I had weeded out the idiots before them. It's really not that difficult once you find the right buyers.

It's basically the process scammers and phishers use, except in reverse.

I saw what I thought was a Dodge Shadow/Plymouth Sundance today and pointed it out to my wife since that was her first car. But no, it wasn't either it was a 1988 Shelby CSX (it was white). It was being driven by an older guy and was in phenomenal shape. I didn't even know they existed.

My dad bought a Starfire GT brand new when I was kid. Went to that from a full size Blazer, I remember being like wtf.

The car was tiny, and in the winter my dad would chain smoke with the windows up, good times.

See this kind of stuff wants me to make an AI challenge where every year (or six months) I have AI find something under say $5k and 500 miles away for me to buy and daily drive. Then when the times up (6 or 12 months) I sell it and let you fools pick the next one.

edit: on second thought maybe 2.5k so I have enough left over to keep whatever shitbox you curse me with for a year.

I think the challenge should require that the car cost less then the miles away from you it is. If you make it home with the car you win.

This could easily be a YouTube show or hell even a TLC show, mix it up with the crap that they have already, do some real light history on the car itself and ham it up with a couple of characters, easy $$$.

5 years ago this would be a $1500-$2k car max. I still would've passed then because of the lovely sunroof. It's the right color at least.

Fly to CA, buy a $1000 Volvo 240 drive back to VA and still have money left over, even after gas.

Dad's been doing that with rust free trucks since I moved to TN. I'll get an email, usually Thursday/Friday, with a couple craigslist links and a max price. I go test drive and look them over then buy the best of the bunch. My brother details the hell out of it then he or I drives it to Wisconsin and Dad flies the driver home. Rust free southern trucks go for a premium up north and Dad's got nearly unlimited frequent flier miles from work.

Usually a lot of fun and a decent profit even after driving the thing 1000 miles.

You could add addition rules to limit the selection for each episode. Must have velour seats.

Championship level, must be assembled in the UK.

I knew there had to be someone doing this for a business. Gonna do the same thing come spring for a personal car; anything up here in my price range is on it's way to death via rust.

That wouldn't get views though, not unless it was some rare turbo wagon or something so you could talk about it. Like hell that Wagoneer is even cool enough to do a show about, go buy it, bring it back and talk about it while in the car driving. Dub over some footage and things from its history and you've got a little show.

I bought a shiny little 90s ford escort hatchback there for like $500, and drove it all over the beach and ocalla. A few months in Iowa and now it looks like any other 90s escort you've ever seen :(
