Does anyone know why Brownback seems to hate Kansas Neurological Institute specifically? There are rumors going around that some state hospitals might actually see some raises, but absolutely definitely not KNI. Did it just happen to be first on his list of socialist hellholes to close, and since it survived he's sworn vengeance like a good devout Christian would?

I talked to a former KU psychiatry prof at a candidate event recently and they said the state mental hospitals are getting a boost so they can be raised to federal standards, with the intent of qualifying for Federal grants that would make it worthwhile. Speculation is proposal from the far right will attempt to privatize state mental hospitals for everything else. I think the grants are for redirecting from prisons; if KNI can't accommodate criminals they will be left in the cold.

I tell ya, there is so much crazy happening in KS that there's no way a voter would tolerate keeping their door open long enough for me to tell them about all of it. Two weeks until election, and I've got 4,000 unaffiliated voters left to try and reach. :tipshat:

Deeply Republican states would elect somebody worse than Hitler if there was an R next to the name. They'll find some way to blame the Democrats; Obamacare will probably get the blame for Kansas happening somehow.

Republicans are almost certainly going to win. Though there are little victories insofar as a lot of Brownback toadies were primaried out months ago. Whether or not the new incoming republicans are even remotely better is yet to be seen.

IIRC I think polling was on the side of keeping the ACTIVIST JUDGES because despite the state being blood red, Brownback loving with the public school system so much that the supreme court had to rule it illegal multiple times actually sticks to a lot of the people I talk to.

I guess we can feel at least a little bit good that Brownback only has 2 more years and then he's term limited out. I'd loving love to see his stupid rear end try to run for president in 2020 or 2024 and get loving crushed in the primaries.

Moderate R's already drove out a number of the baddies in primary contests, and a decent number of D's look to win their general. Right now the question is will the cons keep a majority and stave off a moderate coalition with D's.

State candidate polls are paid for by the campaigns, so not many candidates have polls to look at. State Senate polls cost minimum $5k, which is more than my entire budget.

I always root for the Johnson County Dems, because I feel like, opinions-wise, they have a shot at turning that county blue. It wouldn't sway a whole state, but it would change up voting blocs. I always felt like Johnson County was a place where, if lefties weren't so discouraged, you'd have a closer fight on state and midterm elections.

I haven't had much contact with them since moving to Lawrence a decade ago, but when I ran for office in 2004, their ground game was unimpressive. Now- I wasn't a high priority candidate, but just a guy who couldn't let Campbell run unopposed for Olathe's state house rep. But when I met with party people, I noticed nobody but the other candidates were over 30, and our event roster was miniscule compared to the county GOP's. I really, really hope they get their poo poo together, and get whatever support from the national DNC that would take. Democrats need to up that local politics game

Douglas County Democrats do alright, but it's not a difficult fight. As rough as that election was, at least Dennis "Boog" Highberger is still my state rep.

Kansas mandates annual inspections of permanent amusement park rides but allows private inspectors to do the checks, rather than requiring a state inspection. A document released by the state Department of Labor after Caleb's death showed that all of Schlitterbahn's rides passed private inspections in June.

"In our 50 years of providing an environment for families and friends to gather," the statement read, "we've never experienced this kind of devastating event."

I actually am thinking about getting involved in Reno county, it's total hicksville here but apparently the county democratic party was able to finally oust Jan Pauls this cycle.

For anyone who doesn't know/remember that's this lovely lady: http://www.hutchnews.com/news/local_state_news/pauls-drops-the-d-and-joins-gop/article_37654038-0d94-5074-aa3c-36cfefdb1177.html

She was a democrat who ran on a super anti-gay and anti-abortion rhetoric and held the seat since 1991 and was basically an ancient relic of the old blue dog days. In 2010 she got redistricted to somewhere she didn't actually live, causing her to buy an abandoned church in her new district to 'live in' for her campaign. In 2012 she had a primary challenger from the left by a gay man. Then when she barely won (by 8 votes) she was challenged from the left by the republican contender who was also a gay man who was in the same LGBT coalition as her primary candidate. Again, she barely won and after the victory promptly changed to a republican because it was easier to defend herself from the big mean gays challengers from the right.

I kind of wrote the election off as a loss again this year but somehow we pulled it off at least on the county level. Statewide it seems as though a lot of Brownback toadies got ousted too, too bad they still basically outnumber the dems and relatively sane GOPers still.

Is the experiment over? Kansas Legislature passes big income tax hike

quote:

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -
The Kansas Legislature has approved a big increase in personal income taxes to help balance the state budget in a move that defies Republican Gov. Sam Brownback.

Senate approved a bill Friday that would generate more than $1 billion over two years. The vote was 22-18.

Senators acted the day after the House approved the measure, so the bill goes to Brownback. He has strongly criticized the bill and said he would not sign it, but he has so far stopped short of saying specifically that he would veto it.

The bill would abandon core tax-cutting policies Brownback championed in 2012 and 2013 to help close projected budget shortfalls totaling nearly $1.1 billion through June 2019.

Supporters did not have the two-thirds majorities necessary to override a possible veto.
