Some rich chinese lady who's a family acquaintance wants another kid. She's state owned coal mine rich so of course the new hottness is to have a surrogate give birth for you. She wants twin boys so she paid some tall blonde with blue eyes to donate an egg that is being fertilized with another tall blond man with blue eye's sperm. The other egg is coming from her fertilized with her husband. One of the babies will have no shared genes with her family but will gain much face by being so Aryan.

Guess what qualities she wants for the surrogate? Tall blonde and blue eyes despite the surrogate having no effect on the baby's genes.

The whole thing sounds super weird to me but its worth the $100k's to her so that she can one up all her friends.

I wouldnt put it past her to dye her hair and wear blue contacts once she had the baby so she can claim she is actually a white woman

What is the deal with The Spaghetti House in Hong Kong? Seems like there's one every couple blocks. And they are surprisingly nice inside considering their bright neon signs and bubble letters.

They are own by Cafe-De-Coral which naturally means they are everywhere. It is pretty much like how KFC/Pizza Hut is owned by YUM company. If the information is accurate Hong Kong was/still is a big duopoly to the point that two brands owned by the same company would "Compete" with each other sometimes meters apart. Things have broken up recently so cellular prices have crashed to a 1/3 of what it was a year or so ago.

Which then leads to the next topic Mobile Internet. It sucks. There are just to many users which means in some places you just don't get any bandwidth. I laugh at the egg heads who are developing 5G with their claims of 10K users and other benefits as Hong Kong level of traffic would lay waste to it. The deals are somewhat absurd as you pay for x GB of "Fast" data which you can easily blow through just from App updates which you then get downgraded to a much slower speed.

My relatives being idiots and low end computer users signed me up to a 1GB plan with 384Kb/s which is 48KB/s which in this day and age is not a workable amount of bandwidth. Even loading simple websites is an arduous task. I had warned them at the time of purchase that I will run out of data in 3 days but they went ahead anyway as they were more interested in passing the SIM card and plan on to sister than to meet my immediate needs.

So I ran out of data 3 days later. I got pointed to a cell phone only building where I got a unlimited 4G card. This turned out to be half a mistake as I ended up paying 3 times more than I should have for the same thing as the open air markets were selling which would have given me a much, much better disposable SIM. The place was recommended by my Aunt so yeah, that is pretty much the explanation you need for this gently caress up.

Speed changes constantly as I can get anywhere from MB/s to next to nothing. I am not sure what is going on exactly but two conclusions come to mind. A. Traffic congestion or B. Net Neutrality doesn't exist here. I am leaning A as speed varies depending on where you are and the expected number of user in the area like for expample Shum Shui Po is just packed while back at home I can get MB/s because everyone is at work by the time I wake up.

Wired internet is also a mixed bag. Competition is intense now days but Fibre roll out has been terrible as there is no government mandate to do so unlike New Zealand where for the same price as ADSL you get a 3X boost in speed just for moving to Fibre. Even ADSL is a bit dodgy as people just expect you to use mobile internet even at home. Luck would have it 2 ADSL sales men showed up at the same time letting the husband play them against each other for a lower price and removing all package deal extras. The companies being dodgy fucks tried multiple times to sneak in additional services without consent which resulted in multiple calls to remove the extra services and the associated fees.

It got to the point the Husband simply threaten to leave while withholding payment as they would remove the extras only to re-add them the next month. This finally did the trick and they have been enjoying package free internet since.

gently caress YES this poo poo is so good. I have to stuff the bag in a tall, out-of-the-way cabinet lest I hork the whole thing in one go. That and those CNY candies in the shiny red and gold wrapping. And Haw flakes. And botan candy. I might have to go shopping now....

Anyways, thank you for these write ups. It's interesting to see life in another place.
I am glad everyone is enjoying them. Your encouragement goes a long way!

Truly rare candy are the really traditional ones like Dragon whiskers. I think there are 2 places that make and sell them on the spot and I have found both. When asked even they say they are rare and possibly a dying art. As a kid I could find them everywhere along with some sort of wrapped coconut and sugar candy. There is one Whiskers seller on the ground floor of Dragon Centre and another some where between Shum Shui Po and Mong Kok. If you are lucky you might just catch them in the process of making them.

I have been walking back and forwards around Mong Kok and Shum Shui Po a lot and maybe covered half of it these last several days, but I plan to move on and head to Hong Kong Island on a ferry at least once and check out central and ride the trams.

I forgot to mention it in the last post but last night something weird even for Hong Kong happened. I was heading to the MTR to leave Shum Shui Po when a group of cyclist came by on their bikes. A man with a high-end camera took a photo at which point they stopped. They then got off their bikes, had a quick woot we did something moment and then procced to go back to the direction they came from by walking their bike back. They ha all the safety gear you could ask for with bikes that over extremely over engineered for almost purpose which would include 100Km rides on country roads. Maybe they do ride on "Rougher" (Read up hill) terrain, but I had a impression flat and with a little bit of pedestrian traffic is about the most exciting thing they do with their bikes.

There is an Ice Rink in Dragon centre(I will try to move on from that place) where the highest level of skill observed is a penguin like shuffling. If I skate there I would be a God even if most of what I can do is skate forward, tight circle and hard stops.

Badminton would have been the same at least with the group I was slated to play with. I could see the men were holding back for the ladies but if you play and organize as much Badminton as I do you have to learn how asses skill levels. Hopefully next time things are better organized as I made it abundantly clear what amount of time is acceptable. I don' mind playing with lower level players as it lets me teach other people to play which helps me be more aware of how I play. Also with Badminton other than playing it, my goal is to get as many people playing it.

Back in New Zealand I would always glad hand new arrivals to the club regardless of skill level to get them to play here or at other places. While obviously it would be preferable for them to play with us, as long as they play, I am happy. There are open air Badminton courts nearby but without the gear and social connections it would be rude to even ask to join. I am still getting my exercise though so I am not too miffed about that aspect.

I am planning to go see John Wick 2 as I have heard many great things about it. The ticket prices are compatible to New Zealand on cheap Tuesdays but I would like to see it with my relatives if possible to make it a social event.

Tinder as been very slow going. I have two girls who have said more than "Hi" and are continuing a conversation as slow as it is which is slow even when taking into account ESL. I have pushed for a meeting when an opening presents itself. What should be my next step to get a meet? Should I just straight up offer to pay for a meal or a place to go to? Is this what I should be doing or am I just going to have to be patient? What is the culturally acceptable thing to do? The voting booths are open so cast your votes! Just found some old Soy Milk I forgot about in my backpack, gross.

Currently trying to get my Aunt to understand I want to get my $1000 HKD notes exchanged for something more acceptable but she thinks I am looking to do some foreign exchange and I that have $1000 NZD or US notes. She has picked up the word change but not in the context of making change.

She is very frustrating and really nosey. But I give her a pass anyway because she tries very hard and she means well. I am getting Sister to explain to her in person what I need to do with the notes so that I am not going out there with money I can't spend.

I forgot to mention that of all the things I have eaten so far I got mild food poisoning from the CUTLET place. Woke up with vomit at the back of the throat but managed to keep it under control.

The waiters at the CUTLET place picked up I drink a lot of water and refilled my cup nearly immediately after a slow start whenever I pushed my cup out. Naturally it wasn't cold however is was a much easier to drink warm temperature.

badminton is the game people in shanghai slums play on the sidewalk in front of their store or apartment lobby when they're bored, im surprised it needs a bunch of gear shopping or two hours in a stadium

for the sim card data plan stuff, doesn't hong kong have a bunch of wifi? when i was there in 2008 a bunch of places had it, and they even had those public phone booth hotspots all over Central and Mong Kok. since you were using a local SIM, was that ever an option?

The relatives hosed up when they got my card as not only did they mess up the unlimited speed option but forgot to get the pass to the wifi network to that company. I couldn't fail more if I tried.

I can bypass the tan tan issue when I get back home as I can switch out one of the SIM I still have and "verify" that way. But I am wary of mainland apps.

I don't know what they play in China but we play the codified international version. I am sure whatever they are doing is cool like how you get a ball and set down some school bags and call it soccer.

Overseas Chinese people never seem to have much fun in China.

When I was first there one of my friends was a Chinese-Canadian-American vegetarian girl who had majored in Women's Studies, what she did enjoy she only enjoyed perversely, and it was pretty obvious it wasn't the high adventure for her it was for some of us.

They're not Korean. If you're not born and raised there you're not one of them, no matter how much you want to be. Some were mixed race also which made it even worse. As a honkey you kind of expect to be treated as an outsider but if you're Korean and go to Korea to find your roots and hit that same wall, it's much worse. I had a couple friends who were Korean mom/American dad and they had all kinds of stories of being told how their moms were whores and it was a shame they weren't taught proper Korean culture and oh your Korean is so bad, you don't belong here.

This is not as true for adoptees, there's a "it's not your fault" vibe there and they tend to be accepted more in my experience.

true, I knew a few that had come back to korea to try and find their birth families. A couple succeeded. Some were really angry about being adopted.

As far as korean americans, I found male LA gyopos to be almost universally scum and/or douche bags. I have a really good gyopo friend from New Jersey, and he agrees. Most Korean American guys did pretty well as far as plunging went, but the korean american girls (and adoptees, usually) were always kinda chubby and would wind up dating black guys.
