Gastronomical disappointment. Today should have been an excellent day, not a great day. The food poisoning from last night still lingers as I write this. I spent a good portion of the day sapped of energy and in very little position to eat much which is a bit disgraceful. I am bloated and I expect maybe another half day before I fully recover. Still better than the time my Sister got sick after going to the swimming pools, she was sick for a whole week. I was not in the best shape to go on the road trip but well enough that I wasn't going to complain about it. We first went to Sai Kung which is one of the few places you would consider a "Coast" in Hong Kong. Naturally the fish is extremely fresh and people buy them right off the boats at the wharf where they keep them alive in plastic tubes of water. The restaurants do the same with some having enough sea life to start an ocean park. Giant fish, giant crab, shellfish, if you could eat is, it is there. We had Dim Sum again but there were some speciality seafood dishes on offer but I had little ability to stomach it. As always we order a poo poo load of food and worry about eating it all later. Then we hope on to a tour ferry which do round trips to the local islands. They also pick up and drop off people at people's requests like overly enthusiastic hikers who like looking at a nondescript island that is only a couple basketball courts wide. We see the Elephants Nose Point which one of two notable points of interest in the area. There are multiple tourist traps along the route and we stop at one. This had the second point of interest at Sharpe Island where there is a crossable underwater path from the main island to a tiny island that gets revealed at low tide. The whole area is remnants of a caldera from a volcano that erupted 100,000 years ago. When you get off you get a ticket to get back on the boats. there are multiple rival tour boats so you have to remember which flagged boat company you took. You surrender the ticket when you get back on. I am not sure what happens if you have "No Ticket" but I guess they will take you back after charging you at an extra rate. The lady who sailed us back was very lively talking almost constantly in a loud but not shouting force about one thing or another while complaining about this and that. On return we headed further down the wharf to the carpark spotting some really big dogs and other assorts smaller ones off leash. They were almost big enough for my small adult sister to ride. I am not sure of the leash laws but I felt sorry for the big husky like dog which was clearly in a constant state of overheating. It is hanging it's tongue as far as it can at all times and was actively searching for more sources of water. I can only imagine it's state when summer comes round. Speaking of dogs and sorrow, my Aunt's brother keeps a small dog and it has been with him for the past 15 years. In dog years this is pretty extreme. It is blind from cataracts so bad you can see it from the outside. It is losing fur in patches, it's left leg is in a bag for an abscess and I am told it is suffering cancer. It smells of death. The poor thing is in a lot of pain but soldiers on trying to act like a dog half it's age trying to greet guests. Having been with him for 15 years he refuses to put it down. It is tragic, but I say nothing as it is not my position to try to argue otherwise when closer family members have failed. I do my best to comfort the dog by helping it play with me at well as it can when it came to me. I am very sad from writing this. Anyway, we leave the wharf and head for the Railway history museum. It covers the founding of KCR(Kowloon Canton Railway) up to it's merger with MTR(Mass Transit Railway) post privatisation to form the MTR corporation which effectively owns public transport. The exhibits include a preserved ticketing and booking offices at Tai Po, a steam locomotive, electric toy trains for the kids, several train cars in their original condition(First, second and third class) as they were back in the day with one lightly converted into a class room. There are remnants of the old tracks, switch, signals and it's associated control system. We head towards the hills stopping Lam Tsuen Valley where there is a wishing where you use to throw fruit at with a red wish card and higher you got, better your outcome. The original is in a pretty bad state with a fair amount of effort to keep it a live. A second, artificial wishing tree was built to accommodate this tradition. Now instead of fruit you throw a plastic ball. I decided to make my only luck by modifying the wish card to something smaller and aerodynamic which let me throw it higher than just about everyone else. If I added some extra weight to the ball I might have even got it higher as it would have enough extra energy to feed the drag coming from the card and made it easier to throw. There is another smoke full temple there, but unlike all my visits before I don't make prays or wishes there. Also there is a controversial toilet there where I was told it had costed a lot of money to make. I make a visit and conclude they clearly didn't spend enough money as the place is rank, dingy and just awful all round. It has been the worse toilet I have been to on my visit here. Truly terrible. After some dessert of tofu jelly we move on to Tai Mo Shan Country Park which contains the highest point in Hong Kong where the Radars are placed. From there you can see into the mainland if the pollution is in your favour. It over looks the Shek Kong military airfield. There are private pilots and facilities available on the airfield but it is a sorry place to be flying your own plane. The opening hours from private citizens is only during the weekends. Taking off towards the north very quickly takes you into mainland China which is a big NO as Chinese airspace is wholly owned and controlled by the PLA. The PLA has little concern for commercial traffic resulting in extremely congested airspace. Private flying pretty much doesn't happen and because of he pollution more often than not you would be forced to fly in IMC(Instrument meteorological conditions) which is not great if you have a visual only rating. To the south is Hong Kong and the international airport which i another no go zone. So that only thing you can really do in a fixed wing aircraft is to either circle the airfield or head to Macau. It is really not worth the trouble no matter your goals to be flying in Hong Kong privately. We next head to Tsuen Wan where we observe an excellent sunset while travelling on the motor way on our way to The Hong Kong Gold Coast Piazza. The Piazza is a massive façade as everything there is painted concrete all made to look Veneation without the canals. Somehow this falls below Trumps level of style. There are massive super yachts and the like but they are the only real display of actual wealth in the area. Don't come here expecting something interesting to see. Mong Kok to eat at a Japanese self cook BBQ with some of my Aunts friends. People in Hong Kong don't cook much as there is easy and cheap food everywhere so going to these places to cook for themselves is a bit of a novelty to them compared to New Zealand where cooking your own meals is a must if you want to keep your food bill under control. They are not very good at this. Even though I am not the best, I take control as they keep overloading the cooking area and just dumps meat all over the place without thinking of cross contamination between cooked beef and cooking chicken etc. My aunt just doesn't get the message as she keeps dumping food which both makes it harder, less safe and slower to cook than having a more controlled situation. I leave for the toilet and when I come back they made a mess of things burning a lot of food and rendering the cooking area almost unusable with charred debris. I stop caring at this point as they make charcoal which sealed my disappointment from my inability for the day to enjoy the food at it's fullest. We then go to a series of shops which is a sort of Hong Kong Savile Row where it is wall to wall suits. I got told to come here earlier to have a look by my aunt, however she doesn't know or will ever figure out that dropping a pin at telling someone to go there in Google doesn't get them to the precise location they need to be without more information like simple things like building/shop/street number. We get this sorted with the normal amount of fuss required to return for the suit the next day. Another big day tomorrow where we will be taking the ferry to Hong Kong island and taking a public transport tour there. Xerxes17 posted:This. My mom called my doctor and said to him "What's the most accurate measurement for weighing?" The doctor said "An underwater weighing test" And just like that, my mom said "Yes. When can my son and my daughter can take it?" and the doc said "Today at 2pm." So, I didn't bother taking a shower and so did my sister too, so I had to get into a special swimming suit(tight pants...Ugh). My sister said "Can I pull my hair down to a ponytail?" The doctor said "No." So my sister with her long, blonde hair went underwater with 8 seconds and had she must enjoyed it..but I didn't.

Well I am sure he would be sent to a mental hospital and get released after 10 years, if he was in Canada.

Moved to Calgary three weeks ago for work. Getting to know the place, and decided to go down town and have some Korean food. I get off the C-Train and am waiting for the 414 bus. I'm waiting 15 minutes now and a Chinese couple in their 50's comes over to where I am waiting. They start speaking Mandarin, and are pointing at the bus sign. I figure they probably know when the bus is arriving. Me (in Mandarin): Hello, how are you? Them: <Blank stare> Me: "Hello, are you waiting for the 414 bus?" Them: "No English" Me: "I'm speaking Mandarin" Them: "No English" Me: "Ni HAO!" <trying to reset the conversation to Mandarin> Them: "Ni Hao!" Me (still in Mandarin): Are. . . you. . . waiting. . . for. . . the. . . 414. . . bus?" Them: "No English!" Me: "操你妈的屄" (your mother's vagina!) Them: "Nooooooo Eeeeeeglish!" <walks into Korean Restaurant 15 minutes later and sits at a table> <a 65 year old Korean granny comes to take my order> Me (in Korean): "I'd like some Gamja-tang, some radish kimchi, and some tea please" Her: "yeeeeeee" Me: "Thanks!" <5 minutes later my order arrives without any mistakes>

Meeting the Orthodox Jew happened in Hong Kong, but in a part of Hong Kong one would not expect to find an orthodox Jew in. I suspect he was travelling through as there is a famously cheap hotel in this district and it is on the way to the airport.

I had a white coworker who spoke pretty good Mandarin and he was speaking to a family on vacation (hotel work) and the 20-something daughter was more then happy to engage but told him his accent and pronunciation was too stiff and formal since most people don't speak "proper" Manadarin and its a huge mess of dialects and accents and local jargon so someone speaking textbook correct sounds kind of weird to what she was used to. Something about she was from Shanghai and he sounded like he was from Beijing so that why it was weird to her.
