Well, the Caps somehow lost to Detroit, but Mrazek played pretty great so it's hard to be mad.

Unless this is the beginning of the Caps' annual slide coming off that break.

There are quite a few that have a lot to do with the time they played in. Like I think Cy Young's record for pitcher wins is unbreakable because he got in over 100 years ago no pitcher will ever be used that often again. Or in the NBA you have rebound records for Wilt that won't ever be touched because there are considerably fewer opportunities for rebounds now than there were before, without even getting into the specifics of Wilt's dominance. Hell, Glenn Hall's record for consecutive games for a goalie is going to be impossible to break as it stands, since what goaltender is ever going to get the chance to go a full season starting? I think it's likelier that there's a new scoring wave in the NHL followed by a Gretzky level talent coming in to an Oilers level team, even if it is still obscenely unlikely.

thanks for the serious replies! i guess i was thinking less in terms of iron-man type records, which are impressive but i don't view on the same level of achievement as production-related records. same goes for winning championships, which is why i specified 'individual' records, and for old timey sports fellas that set crazy records before electricity was invented

the chamberlain record is a good one. still feels like gretzky's scoring has got to be at least top 3 in terms of untouchability, if not #1

The really untouchable records in North American sports are all of the pitcher records from the late 19th/early 20th centuries. Wilt's record will probably get broken someday...Kobe Bryant had 81 a few years ago, that's a whole lot closer than any modern pitcher will ever get to 680 innings pitched in a year or whatever that record is.

As far as NHL records that are actually sort of breakable (no one will ever beat 502 consecutive goalie games period) go I feel like Bobby Orr's +124 is pretty much untouchable unless the league changes in crazy and unpredictable ways. No one has gotten even halfway there in the last 30 years.

edit - also, 472 PIM
