But you know what? At least they weren't sequels to comic book movies. Holy gently caress do movies suck now

Has there been a lack of terrible fun movies or does that stuff need time to... congeal? What would be a good recent example?

Judge Dredd isn't entirely stupid. The scene where Dredd is dog fighting with the other evil judge hunters and easily levels half a dozen apartment buildings is absolutely played for dark laughs.

Two funny things from Suicide Squad that immediately pop to mind: - When Rick Flagg just shrugs after he witnesses his boss murder a room full of computer jokeys - The running gag where helicopters keep getting shot down, but nobody important gets killed or even wounded

Improbable Lobster posted:Suicide Squads extremely poor editing was pretty funny Suicide Squad isn't badly edited. It's tastelessly edited - which is an important distinction. The noticeable recycling of effects shots gives it a distinct Roger Corman vibe, for example. People like to point out 'it was edited by a trailer company!', but Hollywood trailers aren't known for their bad editing. Quite the opposite, they are known for being too well-edited, to the point of misleading people.

I don't know how controversial this opinion is but b v s is my personal worst blockbuster movie of 2016, like how do you get three of the most iconic characters in American pop culture and make it so dull and agonising to watch

In the same way that lala land had great actors to elevate otherwise fairly paper thin characters, b v s had the four leads (being generous because I was not very impressed with the super man actor) doing their damned best to make the movie work but the movie just refused to let them breathe. The very few things I genuinely enjoyed about the show is the late night comedy clip that ends with the Martian

They bit off way more than they can chew and they're still trying to choke it down. Marvel worked because they took 4 years before their first team up film to figure out their formula and let people get a feel for their characters and aesthetics. I seriously doubt that we'll get a DCU film that actually manages to garner a positive critical response any time soon. It'll just be a slow decline in profit until the suits call the whole thing off.
