The one thing that bugs me about mobile Firefox is that some buttons are not very responsive, and some can't be tapped at all. Reddit is particularly bad in this regard, e.g. next page buttons.

Firefox's scrolling is slow as hell. As soon as I installed it I went digging through the stupid about :config stuff trying to find something that would make it less like swimming in mud. Chrome/webview stuff lets you fling the page nice and fast, Firefox makes your thumb work for it

What?

Firefox also doesn't have double tap and drag to zoom for some reason, unless it's buried in settings somewhere. In all fairness I've never gone looking for it because I used it too infrequently.

And I have even less reason to bother now that I have netguard.

I have two NetGuard (actually Tasker) questions: Is there really no way to automate downloading the hosts file besides Tasker? Can Tasker really not work on a schedule without running as a foreground app?

Like I said, this is for my girlfriend for use primarily in one app (that can't be replaced or made ad-free) that has intrusive fullscreen ads. She probably won't have need for the app for too much longer but with DNS66 the ads return after a while without refreshing the hosts file. It's worse than a porn site. I was hoping there was a way to automate the process but it seems the dev recommends Tasker and pointing it at an intent which is really overkill for such a thing (especially since NetGuard has to be running foreground anyway). It sucks to need two foreground apps but I can't figure out how to set Tasker to just wake up for a standard task at a set time without it running in the foreground. Disabling foreground running causes the task not to fire in the limited testing I did but Tasker is so difficult to configure I'm hoping I just did it wrong.

Yeah, I was unsuccessfully trying to convey the idea that maybe DNS66 just sucks and it wasn't actually an issue with the hosts file.

Or in other words, before going through the trouble of setting up something automated for the hosts file, just try it for awhile without the auto updating.

Since you all are talking about this, there is no way to modify the host file without rooting, correct? I'm assuming you need root for anything that could touch it, but that is really unfortunate.

If you're not rooted, you have to run things through a fake VPN done by an app to make use of a modifiable hosts file. This will work with every device though.

If you are rooted, you can skip using one of those apps and just modify the system's hosts file directly.

Either way, you're able to make use of the benefits of blocking out annoyance servers in the hosts file.

A few years ago I used this app for this purpose: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.denper.addonsdetector&hl=en

It'll look through all your applications and tell you which ones are able to do things like push notification ads and poo poo like that. I used it back then because all of a sudden I started getting those things, and the culprit was some random game that must have been bought out by someone, and so was able to remove the offending app.

DNS66 uses the same hosts file source.

My biggest issue with NetGuard has little to do with the app, it's that the developer has a lovely personality. I mean, I guess that's no reason to not use the app but if you go to his preferred support venue, XDA, there's a poll at the top asking why you're using the app and of course the answer is adblocking. But in practice he talks about not being interested in making that easier to do, even going out of his way to make it more difficult because user donations didn't roll in when he created the intent to refresh the hosts file. Users pointed out maybe implementing something in such a way that it requires a second app to work was so poorly done that no layperson could use it and that's why there's such a poor response but he was having none of it.

Then in the thread itself he constantly bitches about users not paying money. First of all, it's obvious that users are coming for the adblocking and that if they're using the version with adblocking capabilities they're locked out of using the Play Store to pay for poo poo so most of his users couldn't pay if they wanted to. He also complains about poor reviews from users who aren't in love with everything about the app (users are idiots though, I get that but then so should developers). He's constantly begging for donations while all the while making it difficult to actually want to do so. All in all he's just a lovely guy.

That said, the DNS66 guy is fairly apathetic. The AdAway people reached out to him wanting to merge their products even going so far as to add "66" to AdAway's name. They had more than a few people on their side ready to start working with him to integrate his stuff into AdAway and to work on usability and UI stuff so that they could be a root and non-root one stop shop but he just stopped talking to them. Maybe stuff is going on behind the scenes but the AdAway contributors seemed just as in the dark as anyone.

I'm not saying NetGuard isn't the better product, it obviously is, I'm just saying it's heavy for what it's being used for and the developer has such a bad attitude that it makes it difficult for me to want to be invested in it.

Right, I'm just saying that it's completely possible that DNS66 just doesn't work and maybe you shouldn't put any effort into automating hosts file updates until you know you need to. I mean, my experience with ad blocking is evidence in the "you really don't need to upgrade your hosts file very often"-column.

You might be right, if I'm told the ads return I'll make the switch but given just how intrusive and sketchy the ads are, it sure sounds like the sort that try to subvert adblocking attempts. I can't imagine ads that give the fullscreen YOUR PHONE IS 83.7% INFECTED! with no way to close it are playing by the rules in other areas.

Then again it's not like I'm using the device or seeing the problem so an accurate diagnosis is unlikely to be forthcoming. In the few days I used it DNS66 worked just fine all the time, but I also wasn't seeing the shittiest mobile ads ever created when I had no adblocker.

Man, it sucks that both developers seem to kind of suck.

In my experience (roughly a month for each), Netguard seems to work for adblocking but DNS66 doesn't, consistently. I checked and I hadn't updated the hosts file in 10 days, while with DNS66 it would only function for an hour or so after updating the hosts file.

Aware of that. I mean, I'm not finding any that I like in the stock phone. I need to add some more. They're too high pitched over all and I don't hear them well due to my hearing loss at higher frequencies. I miss them too easily. So I need to add some and I haven't had to do that on previous phones because I've found suitable ones. So I'm looking for an app that lets me preview them and add them to the phone to use.

They're just sound files, and they can be stored in any folder on the phone, though a lot of people prefer to put them in a Ringtones folder. You should be able to just plug your phone in by USB to your computer and drag them over after you try playing a few through your computer. Maybe even if just copy the various notification sounds from your computer's OS if they sound ok to you.
