Got about 105 hours playtime into Joker 3 professional, and it feels like the most balanced DQM game yet for online play. There is also a ton of offline stuff to do. It definitely feels like the best DQ Monsters game ever made, and probably the best DQ game on the 3DS, as opposed to Joker 3 normal which was probably the worst.

Anyone who invests time into this game is probably going to love it. Here are some cool monsters:

The return of the super retro bosses, Lord Draco, Genoshidoh, Asura Zoma, Psycho Psaro, and Gran Estark.

And of course, the Zodiac Slime Cancer is back as well!

Don't worry too much about the bazaar, it's there forever and you get plenty of good gear around that time without it. Just use it for a few recipes and then for alchemy sperging much later when you have unlimited money from grinding the casino.

I wanted to replay the rest of the series after finishing 8, starting with 1...but man the first game is a slog. I hate how in some areas the game will just flat throw high level enemies who wipe you and cost you the money you were grinding for. Should I bother keep going since I just reach the town pass the dragon tunnel. Or I just move on to DQ2, since at least I have party members now.

I honestly think 2 is the worst in the whole series. 1 and 2 are definitely dated, but 1 gets the benefit of the doubt as it was a genre starter. 2 is a failed experiment in balance, but i'm not sure how any of the remakes are.

3 is where it's at. Go play the original AND the remake of that one

I played the original version on the NES when I rented it as a kid, so I am just going to skip to the SNES remake on my Everdrive. Already started it up, which i Just doing basic grinding right now. What a good class lineup anyway. I made one of each character but my party is current Hero, Warrior, Thief, and Cleric.

Everything is generally useful. I think the speed run uses something similar to that, or maybe alternates between thief and mage for certain things.

For dq3, I always start with fighter/priest/wizard. Then power level a jester/goof-off later on to become a sage and turn my fighter into a soldier for late game dual sage murder party with either my starter priest or wizard...Ending with hero/soldier/sage/sage.

Fighter is a great starter because it's cheap to gear-up and has crazy AGI and lands critical hits a lot. Also golden claw power leveling is always great

Once you get past the first tournament then the area with the metal slimes that you use the metal tickets to get to changes and you can really rack up the exp there easily.

Obtuse.....even hokey.
Does Red's gold stealing ability take into account enemy level? I was doing some grinding on Neos for gold and she would steal about 2x what randoms normally dropped until I beat Dark Citadel and the random encounters upgraded. Now she steals slightly less than what they normally drop.

Grotto Grind is available well before the postgame. I had the magic gauntlets from the intro grotto for much of the game because they dropped immediately and without using the Hoimi Table.

Also the grind is near-zero using the Hoimi Table, which everyone should use if they want Grotto gear because gently caress that 2% drop rate nonsense.

Skip DQ2 and go right to DQ3. DQ2 even as a remake is still not a very good game. DQ3 can be pretty long but it's well made DQ4 and beyond get much more user friendly and overall easier with a few exceptions.

Yeah that's what am going to do. I ended up just watching a longplay of II to see how it would been like and man that game has a lot of padding. It goes from uniting the cousins to traveling to the old Dragon Lord castle from the first game....only to find out you need to find five emblems that take up the rest of the game until you beat up Hagorth and his master.

So glad the remake of III on the SNES has a lot of the nice quality of life changes like Zoom actually letting you pick towns now.

it was such a pain in the rear end doing 8 damage to single enemies to get here that i'm gonna savor doing 50+ to the whole enemy team very much

is it worth going for the +50 to unarmed or does that not factor into thin air's damage? i kinda want to work on another skill tree

Fisticuffs are real bad for attacking, just always use your strongest weapon while dumping all your skill points into Thin Air. You can unequip weapons mid-battle without consuming a turn, so always do that when something no-sells Woosh attacks.

The amount of enemies resistant to woosh is really low so it's not really a problem especially since you can usually easily avoid those mobs.

So glad I took the suggestion to skip to III. The SNES remake is a lot of fun. A few hours in and about to take down the thief in the tower. I do like my party of Hero, Thief, Cleric, and Mage, as it pretty much the classic rpg party mixture that does work perfectly. The only thing is, I don't understand what the late game class change mechanic. I know the cleric and mage benefit from becoming a sage, but what about the thief. Can I keep her a thief the entire game or will they hit a level cap and I am forced to change them?

You can keep the thief forever. or you can class change, halve your stats, and start over from level 1. Class changing mostly benefits characters that are spell casters in their initial class, because they keep those spells when they change classes; stats, on the other hand, will begin higher than starting characters of the same level but will slowly revert to the mean for the second class.

An example of a good class change is to turn a cleric into a warrior , so that the warrior has full warrior abilities plus MP for the cleric spells known prior to the class change. Or take a warrior and turn it into a cleric for the cleric spells you'll learn as you level, plus some extra hp and str (effects diminishing as you level). Lateral moves between physical classes (warrior/fighter/thief) aren't as valuable.

Okay cool. Since my cleric has somewhat decent damage as one, I might turn her into a warrior or fighter while the mage turns into a sage.

A fun thing to do would be to switch your cleric into a physical class and your thief into a cleric. That way both characters get cleric spells and you get to keep the physical class.

That sounds like a good idea, since I can have a fast healer. That one thing I really liked having in DQ8 was how fast Red and Angelo were, so I can generally get someone healed up before any enemy could act. I imagine this class changing system is why the Hero levels up slower then the rest.

Scholars are some of the most pompous and pedantic people I've ever had the joy of meeting.
Starting DQ3 with a goof-off in your party is also worth it if you want to murder the hell out of most of the game because goof-offs can become sages without needing the book of satori or w/e the remake calls it, so you'll have an extra sage who also starts at level 1 with more luck than the rest of your party will have by the end of the game. Multiple goof-offs makes it even better, aside from them being pretty dead weight due to their behavior. I'm not sure how much the SFC/mobile versions tweaked state gains but goof-offs hit the stat cap insanely fast on the NES too and I know I've had ones hit 255 luck before class changing.

Either way, you shouldn't dual class the wizard until they get Bikill (twinhits?) because you'll want that spell sooner rather than later for buffing your hero and thief/fighter/soldier. Especially because bosses have an HP regen mechanic which I don't think the game ever tells you about and for some bosses it's 10% of their max HP, maybe more.

This week's downloadable bonus item for Dragon Quest 8 (3DS) is available in the USA now. At least I was able to grab it just a bit ago. It's Ye Olde Sword of Erdrick, which is just a plain ol' weapon with 20 attack. If you drop it into the Alchemy Pot with a Liquid Metal Sword and some Orichalcum, it upgrades to a version with 120 attack and the ability to cast (a surprisingly weak) Zap when used as an item.

After about 12 years and two separate versions, I finally finished Dragon Quest 8 yesterday. Finished the main story, the trials, Monster Arena rank X, and Memories Lane. I guess I can put this one down now... and move on to the copy of Dragon Quest 9 I picked up a few days ago.
