Rumour: 1800X OC'd on LN2 to 5.14 GHz - 2449 Cinebench WR

Set your Air/Liquid expectations accordingly

It seems to mirror Broadwell-E a lot in most aspects, so I'm now expecting 4.2Ghz all core on air and about 4.5Ghz all core on water. Obviously, the Hex's and Qauds should have an easier time reaching this since everything indicates it's a thermal issue. Ryzen also has percore overclocking, so it might be possible to OC one CCX and leave the other one stock or underclocked.

Also that's the world record FYI, beating the 6950X on LN2 IIRC. AMD's multithreading is noticeably superior to Intels.

We're talking about a GloFo product here, my money is on very significant gains in overclockability for later versions of these chips. I'm still going to sit on my 2500k for now, but I can definitely see it getting replaced in 9-12 months or whatever with a really significant upgrade that probably won't be meaningfully bested for a long time.

Despite the processor + motherboard and processor + h110 combo whoopsies on Amazon yesterday, there are in fact no preorders over at Amazon, just prebuilt machines. =T

guess I *won't* be preordering.

Preorders work on amazon, you just need to click on the processor in those bundles to get to the individual product page (doesn't show up in searches for some reason).

EDIT: apparently I got lucky, says not available now.

Multiple sources have stated that the CPU availability should be plentiful at launch but decent motherboards will be hard to come by. Manufacturers apparently barely had time to finish the designs and did everything to get them out the door with BIOSes lacking optimizations and features, etc.
Guess we'll find out soon enough!

I fully agree that there's a good chance that later steppings will have significantly more OC headroom but 3.9/4.1 seems realistic and good enough for the top models at this point.

I don't think it matters much anymore, most of the stuff is in the CPU, it's almost an SOC.

gamersnexus posted:

As printed in our motherboard article yesterday, most of the I/O is now handled on the CPUs themselves, making for more of an SOC approach rather than relying on a PCH or chipset for high-speed IO. This means that the CPU now carries all the relevant lanes for USB, SATA, NVMe, and PCIe general purpose use, with the chipset offering a few extra lanes and IO devices here and there.

I'm assuming Gigabyte is still poo poo for motherboards? It looks like Gigabyte and MSI are the only two with mATX at launch, so that'd leave MSI I guess as the choice.

Edit - never mind, looks like ASUS and Asrock will too. So Asrock might be the best bet?

I expect these to run way hotter than many expect, particularly with XFR and the resulting absence of OC headroom. That's the one missing aspect that never got mentioned in any of the slides or planted leaks, not once.
No temps, no details beyond unspecified TDP numbers (possibly at base not including XFR, let alone on all cores), no OC results, nothing.

Its not just the chips themselves that determine overclockability - you need good motherboards too and those will also get better with time.

I'm not sure I'd base much on 12 year old via and nvidia chipsets to be honest, different companies and over a decade out of date. And nforce2 was great anyway.

Whatever AMD chipset ran my 965be was really good.

They did it for the 480 as well. Kinda a mixed bag. Preorders were useful in that they were the best way to get the thing at launch price, after that the price went up by like $30 for a couple months. Downside was that you got a launch 480.

Nvidia had preorders for founders edition cards as well come to think about it.

I dunno, preorders are dumb anywhere but at least they make some sense for a physical product that will probably not have enough stock to meet demand. Better than for digital games anyways.

They're gonna be substantially the same mobos as for recent FX chips though, right? Anything that can keep an FX happy should be able to meet the more modest needs of Ryzen.
