Usually you can't recalibrate it in most cars. Maybe with VCDS it's possible.

For a while on VWs there was a setting where you could just select +1 / -1 your diameter and it would recalibrate your spedometer.

The only thing I don't like about the seats in mine is that there's no drat lumbar support in it. That and I'd prefer cloth.

I've done a lot of research on that, and have had the opportunity to get some seat time in a few different cars with this transmission. It's not bad if you understand how it works, have all the latest updates done, and have replaced the roll restrictor (dogbone thing) with something stiffer. When we replaced the mount in my friend's Focus, the transmission went from dimwitted and unsmooth to actually quite nice.

Not necessarily. Over the course of its short 3 year life my MazdaSpeed3 had sustained like $6k in damage (including a bent frame) before I totalled it, and I received $3k less than I paid for it from my insurance, with 50k miles on the odometer.

The advantage of the Focus is that she can turn her seat heater up AND keep her side at 75 while I keep mine at 69 (lol)

I would prefer cloth too. Heated cloth is the best.

VCDS coding today -

removed the alarm if you open the drivers door with the car on
Removed seatbelt chime, for the 100 ft from the work gate to my spot
Added brake light to the rear turn signals on an alternating basis
Comfort open/close for windows and sunroof
Auto rain close
Passenger mirror dips when reversing
Fogs on with high beams
Soundaktor to 0%
Retain heated seat settings

Forgot to add 1 more blink for the comfort indicator which I'll do tomorrow.

Need a new windshield and steering wheel, the rest should just be paint and cosmetic. Haven't had a chance to play with the roof rack any more to see if I can get it to line up properly. I didn't have it on before the accident, so no point of reference there.

There's also a dark spot in the headlight pattern that shouldn't be there. No clue what would be causing that though.

Maybe the software's gotten better but it's still a dry clutch design and across the market those tend to be not so good. All the good ones are wet clutch setups. Wet clutches allow for smoother operation because they tolerate extended slip where dry clutches don't.

You're very correct that it isn't nearly as smooth as a wet clutch DCT, but with the upgraded mount it is snappy and satisfying. It'll never be a torque converter automatic or wet dual clutch, but the mount really does cause it to go from 'unacceptable awful I can't believe they are still using this after 6 years in production' to 'pretty good but not perfect'. I was shocked at the difference it made.

I feel like I'm hand-waving away all the documented issues (and boy oh boy there are a lot of them), and I more or less am. Aside from the mostly-resolved-now issues with seals and transmission controllers failing, and the craptacularly soft mounts, I think most complaints are due to people not understanding how it works and how they need to drive differently. I will say, I'm shocked Ford has stuck with it this long in the US with how badly the things work out of the box even when functioning properly.

The Veloster dct is just as bad or worse. It would go into high temp situation and not engage gears and other weird things regularly. They released a software update after three years but still not fully resolved. VW is probably only dsg I'd recommend on a car I could afford

Cobb is supposed to be one of the most vibrate-y of the RMMs for the FoST. I ordered a CP-E one for mine that's supposed to be a good balance between reducing torque twist and in-car vibrations, most people recommend it.

Yeah, I don't think it would be bad on a 4-cyl but on my 3-cyl it was unbearable.

I don't have any pics and won't be able to get them until late this evening. It looks exactly as you'd expect :)

The VW 7 speed in the low powered models is pretty awful and has its own set of reliability issues. It's especially bad on the Polo GTI which is a shame because it absolutely ruins an otherwise nice little car.

Also earlier this morning I remembered to do some reading to see if Ford had gotten their act together regarding the update on the '16 models with Sync3 (enabling Android Auto) that's been promised almost since buying the car over a year ago, and apparently it finally is...but I'll be taking care of that myself instead :filez:

The trouble with that is many manufacturers are so confident in their autos that they don't even offer a manual anymore.

The aforementioned Polo GTI is auto only here and my manual Mazda 3 was the only model available (base 2.5 which fortunately was the one I wanted anyway). Even the Corolla has only a token manual that is in practice priced above the auto as it's special order.

I have one as a rental right now and it's dreadful. The car itself isn't great either, the steering manages the concurrent trick of being overly weighted and providing no feedback from the road at all. The third door is clever but the rearward visibility is abysmal.

Wait until those stock tires hit rain. I threw mine out after 1000 miles. Steering is weird. They programmed too light on nav and turbo and heavier in the rally and r spec.

Then the stock alignment being similar to a minivans didn't help but limits torque steer to almost nothing. A little less offset in the front and some camber would fix the feel.

Huh, had no idea that was a thing. I have the OEM mount I pulled from my 08.5 pretty much when it was new if anyone wants it.

I went with the Street Unit mount at the time because the CP-E's were impossible to find. I was really happy with it once broken in. A tiny bit of vibration at idle with the A/C on, but otherwise great.

Wound up going with the RMM Mountune developed for the FoST in mine. Pretty happy with it- same deal with the vibes; you can only really notice them at idle with the compressor running. Massive upgrade over the original lovely RMM.


With that, a short shift plate, a weighted shift knob, and a pedal spacer the car feels great. Excited to put some fresh summer tires on it towards the end of the summer this year or at the start of next season.
