I am now really curious about how that happens. I'm going to guess that they haven't given a single Pokemon five types.

I have extremely fond memories in HG/SS of getting a Rattata, training it until it learned Crunch, letting it evolve, and then completely no-selling the entire Ghost gym. Good times, even though looking back I have no clue why I didn't stop at any of the other Dark-type attacks. Probably would have been easier to just power through with my existing pokemon but not nearly as cool.

You can do that with just bite. One of Mortys Gengar is literally incapable of hitting normal types and like half the mons in the gym can only hurt them with curse.

I never really saw the appeal of type-changing abilities like Protean. Can someone explain it to me, preferably in small words?

VVV Huh, got it. Still doesn't much appeal to me personally, I make 'rainbow teams' for as many types as I can cover with only 6 pokemon, but I can see why other people would like it.

Protean changes your type before your attack, so you always have STAB.

When the user is the same type as the move they chose, it gets a 1.5x damage boost. Protean activates before you make your move. Meaning that you have 4 different moves you will always have a damage boost on. Not only that, since it changes your type, it can be used defensively to gain a resistance or an immunity to an incoming move. It makes it very hard for your opponent to read the situation.

It can (and often is) used defensively by doing things like using a Normal Move (to avoid Ghost-type moves), a Ghost Move (to avoid Normal/Fighting-type moves), a Dark Move (to avoid Psychic moves) and so on.

I forget if Greninja can learn Earthquake, but if it can then that makes it functionally immune to Electric stuff, too. Aerial Ace protects it from Earthquake, and so on.

Bulbapedia says no, but it learns Spikes by leveling up* and can learn Mud Sport via breeding. Non-damaging moves, but still Ground Type.

Heart Scales are always a thing, but at least you have access to the move tutor relatively early in the XY games. In Sun and Moon, you don't have access until the Pokémon league and Alolan Marowak learns a move called Shadow Bone at level 27. Literally one level before Cubone can actually evolve into Alolan Marowak at level 28.

Speaking of which, I'm willing to bet that Uranium also has that kind of dickery in their Pokémon movepools as well and the move tutor is in a post-game area or something.

Remember that episode of the anime when they tried to justify why Pikachu doesn't evolve?

It was always sort of intended for pre-evolutions to get a better movepool than their evolved forms, as a sort of incentive for training their weaker forms longer. Nobody cared, though, so the concept was mostly ditched after the first generation.

EDIT: Wait, nevermind, you're saying literally the opposite of what I thought you were. Imagine I responded to someone asking why moves exclusive to pre-evolutions exist.

The unique Pokemon in Uranium look uninspired, but they've got nothing on the ones in Quartz. The starting three Pokemon are all different colored eggs, and also there is this ugly bear that somehow has the ability to charm the gender opposite of its own.

I don't remember the storyline from Quartz, though, and I know it had better design decisions.

Not a surprise, since there is exactly one way you CAN play FFT1.3 and it's the most boring and tedious thing in the world. And doing anything else makes it impossible anyway. He doesn't exactly have a good track record by making entertaining things actually be, y'know, entertaining.

His involvement in the 1.3 LP actually resulted in the creation of 1.3 Content, a spinoff that allowed players to play with the changes without story battles scaling with your level. Basically the original 1.3 requires you to level by smacking your own guys with one character so only that character levels up. You level the other characters using spillover JP only. Then you have to kick out the one leveled character so your overall level drops, thereby keeping the story battles winnable. If you don't do this, it is very easy to end up with an unwinnable game about 5-6 battles in. It's very poorly designed. 1.3 Content is actually reasonable and fun to play.

I find that FFT 1.3's battle design suffers from the exact same problem that Pokemon Uranium does: The designer has a very specific solution to the game in mind, and if you can't figure it out, gently caress you.

Likewise, both are better if you cheat and cut out the grind. OFS programmed cheap Rare Candy into the first shop so he wouldn't have to grind on random mons, and the old 1.3 thread cheated to make JP grinding a non-issue.

I remember the specific thing that made FFT 1.3 cross over from "insane but potentially interesting hack" to "active dickery": When somebody discovered a way to circumvent FFT 1.3's batshit insane leveling method (without cheating; it was a bizarre exploit just like the intended FFT 1.3 leveling method), the designer messed with the code to get rid of it. Rather than embracing players figuring stuff out, he demanded that people play the way he wanted them to.

Nah, I think you're right. The guy didn't make it because he's a serious Pokemon fan and wanted the ROM hack to conform to his serious vision of the franchise, it's just goofy and stupid with terrible sprites and very bad ideas for new 'mons. The guy who made Uranium, by contrast, is all business... the business of making a really bad hack.

Actually the worst thing about FFT 1.3 was the mod author's OC do not steal boss with 999 hp that only ever took a maximum of 1 damage from any attack, and could instantly turn your characters into crystals. Someone figured out that if you positioned yourself very specifically you could get him to walk back and forth onto spike traps which dealt percentage damage, circumventing all his bullshit shields.

The modder promptly threw a fit and patched battlefield traps so they did not affect his super dude.

I just looked it up. The level cap was raised and so the boss's big "gently caress you" mode turned into just annoying instead of a party wipe. It's now fairly trivial to kill the boss with 6 people.

But no, as far as I can tell no one actually did it the intended way.
