Lou and Babs are a lot more old school, Dubas spends most of his time with the Marlies and if the analytics guys got their due then the team never would have picked up guys like Martin, Smith, Polak, etc. There's a lot of good staff around and they're definitely doing better than they did under Nonis/Carlyle, but there's no convincing the old school guys that they don't need some grit or intangibles or whatever, which is how you get Peter Holland getting traded to make room for the worst PK center in the league.

I'll put it this way, Ben Smith was added to the team, in the words of the coach who played him last year, to win faceoffs and help on the penalty kill:

https://twitter.com/mirtle/status/833129397796343808

(NHL average is 90)

So yeah, if Babcock was giving the analytics team any heed he probably wouldn't expect faceoff wins and PK play from this guy.

Yeah Ben Smith is in contention to be the worst NHLer still playing. I wish I was joking. Roman Polak is in contention to be the worst NHL defender still playing.

The current Leafs leadership if it acts the way it has the past year is in serious trouble of sabotaging any Leafs Cup bid over the next few years. The reliance on scrubs like Matt Martin/Ben Smith/Frederik Gauthier/Matt Hunwick/Roman Polak over proven better alternatives this year is scary. There were very positive signs of improvement when Dubas/Hunter/Shanny were seemingly running the show, now it seems like the Lou/Babcock show and they're hemorrhaging talent for no reason whatsoever in order to play vastly inferior players. They have all the pieces this year to put together a contender within a couple years but there's a ton of warning signs they're going to waste it signing and playing terrible players for Intangibles, Grittiness and Faceoffs.

Flipside: They're fans of a team that has been garbage for the overwhelming majority of the last 50 years, not just 25 of them. A team that has had no hope for over a decade until this season, and what hope they do have comes with major strings attached.

This is "Oh I'm sorry you have a poo poo coach, why don't you cry into your 'Atlantic Division Leaders' T-Shirt" all over again. Just because your team is doing well, or has the potential for a bright future doesn't mean you should blatantly ignore the glaring problems with your team.

Yes the Leafs have a good young core but they also give a D-pairing of Roman Polak and Matt Hunwick like 15-20 minutes a game and they chose to go after players like Matt Martin and Ben Smith instead of players who are going to be actual contributors to their next cup run.

I'm not calling the franchise lost or anything but the Leafs are definitely making more questionable moves as time goes on. It's to be expected kinda, it's way harder to build up a team of good players than it is to blow up a team of bad ones, but it's worrying long-term.

Really Lou just needs to give up the ghost and retire, his track record in the modern era sucks and he seems to encourage Babs' bad tendencies.

In positive news, I just got obscenely good tickets for the game against CBJ next month. Looking forward to making a close study of Ovi's gap tooth.

I think in pretty sure paragraph A almost immediately nullifies paragraph B. "Enjoy the ride" seems to be dangerously close to turning pretty quickly into "how can we a win a cup with Matt Martin :qq:"

Maybe Ben Smith plays because this team actually isn't All That Good Yet and all of the best players are under 21, so they're just filling in the gaps with whatever bullshit is lying around because this season effectively doesn't really matter yet even though they have a shot at the playoffs? Do you mean to tell me that it only took 5 months for "I'm just happy that we've got a glimmer of hope" to turn into "gotta dig my shrunken heads from the closet and start dancing around the fire to exorcise the '67 demons"

A Red Wings team with Chris Chelios, Brett Lebda, Andreas Lilja, Darren McCarty, and Dallas Drake getting regular minutes managed to win a Presidents Trophy and a Stanley Cup before Ken Holland steered this bitch into the iceberg and Nearer My God to Thee started blaring so it's really not impossible to become a champion with a great coach, a senile egomaniac in the front office, and a few lovely players on the roster. Why don't we worry about that when we get there, eh?

Koopa Kid

The Smith thing matters because it's a failure in player evaluation. He's not a leftover from the previous regime but a guy specifically targeted by staff to address a need, except he's miserable at it and below readily available replacements, including guys that were already on the roster when he was acquired.

It's one thing to draft high picks and have them hit, but if you can't fill out your roster with properly evaluated guys you just become the Oilers of the last 10 years.

The sky's not falling but the Leafs under Lou have actively acquired Andersen (another failure in evaluation), Polak, Martin, and Smith, guys who are/were not upgrades over their competition. It's not a great trend, and I don't think the 'lost season' defence works when the org is intentionally getting these guys.

as long as he's competent at what he does he'll probably be ok. i mean this is a team that played ben lovejoy on their second pairing for significant stretches last season and playoffs, the penguins live and die by their forwards and the d as a group just needs to be not terrible, for the most part

Kinda surprising he hasn't had any offers in the NHL, given how many teams are hurting for right-shot D. You'd think he'd be an upgrade for a lot of teams on their bottom pairing. I'm guessing he'd come pretty cheap, too, given his KHL time.

I was on a flight from Columbus to Atlanta with Wiz right around the time he picked up the KHL deal. Didn't get to talk to him in the terminal, but he was recognizable.

If the Jackets had picked him up on a league-minimum deal, I'd have been OK with it. He wouldn't have been any worse than Dalton Prout.

T-Bone posted:

I keep forgetting he's still in the league. I'll watch CBJ/Canes games and go "poo poo, how has he lasted this long?". If Jarmo wanted to pick him up for depth, he couldn't be any worse than Dalton Prout (getting to be a theme here). e- Didn't read the trade thread.

He last played for the CBJ back in the dark ages in 2008. He took a big ticket deal to go to Atlanta.
