I had Super Mario Bros. 3 on the NES. I still have it.

It was probably on the Animal Crossing GameCube disc, which I also had.

I also have Super Mario Advance 4.

And then I bought it on the Wii Virtual Console.

And then I also got it on the Mario All Stars Wii disc.

And then I got it on the Wii U Virtual Console.

And then I got it again on the Wii U Virtual Console with the VC edition of the Super Mario Advance 4.

It's a great game.

I have some of those, but would buy the Wii U VC version again on Switch even though I wish that they would include power-up cards as well as level cards. I'm very fond of the remakes of SMB3 except for one thing: I really wish that they would let you go back into levels that you have previously cleared.

The real trick was to not buy very many Virtual Console games and bide your time until Nintendo released a hybrid console/portable, making the idea of owning a bunch of old games on a modern platform appealing!

I have way more free/30 cent VC games than ones I've paid full price for but that'll probably change with the Switch. Definitly gonna grab a bunch of Arcade Archives games too.

The Gamecube rumours have not turned out to be true.

They have said they are vaguely thinking about it but also that they would need to release alternate joycons with analog triggers, and I can tell you that's not happening in the next year.

The rumours were incorrect, Gamecube games aren't coming at launch (no VC games are), and they're not doing wacky button-mapping to simulate analog triggers using digital ones. You can imagine it, but they are very much confirmed to not be doing these things.

An L press is an analog value between 0 and 255, you can't say it's only a half.

Yep, but in Sunshine the trigger was only used for either a full press that kept Mario stationary, and a half press (or anywhere inbetween) to allow him to continue moving.
Obviously for a racing game it wouldn't work, but in Sunshine they were already using it like two separate buttons

It needs two USB ports, and the Switch base stand only has one. Which really should've been a LAN port considering that's what it's gonna be used for on EVERY Switch. Nevermind the portability issue. Only way it's happening is with shiny new Wavebird controllers.

Shovel Knight and Phoenix Wright: Spirit of Justice are on sale. I'm Canadian so mentioning the price will be useless for most of you.

I highly recommend Shovel Knight. It is the only NES retro game I got into. It also has a whole free campaign that plays really differently with a third campaign soon on the way.

3DS has good portability and you can use the screen to quickly switch items while the WiiU I think lets you do Miiverse posts on the go and has an unlockable coop mode with the Amiibo. Or you could hold off for the switch version.

I have and really enjoyed Shovel Knight on Wii U but had been meaning to grab it again elsewhere on sale some time just as a show of support for all the extra free content they've been pumping out for the game so this "we're jacking the price up soon so have one last sale" sale seems as good a time as any to grab it on 3DS I guess. The layering of the 3D looks pretty good on the couple of screenshots on the eShop so that will be nice in addition to the portability.

For reals, do we need a new thread? I feel like there's going to be a weird info dump on March 3rd about the Switch's eShop because they have said virtually nothing about it other than announced a few games which will be available there on launch, said that the VC won't be there at launch, and it looks like there will be a web interface where you can automatically download to your Switch provided it's on wifi (wasn't this added recently for the WiiU anyway?)
