I'm p sure that they are just using the GOP sweep as an opportunity to pass all kinds of poo poo like that whether it is dismantling environmental protections or it is making it harder for people to protest and punching Richard Spencer has nothing to do with that man. Either way punching a Nazi is not sufficient cause to be curtailing the right to assemble. That's bad policy and I'm not going to blame a very small number of protesters for it.

The silver lining in them being dumb enough to try and shut down recreational stores is it will cost them support and votes. Between one third and one half of Republicans support legalization, especially in states where it has passed so expect major bipartisan backlash.

Basically even Nixon knew he wasn't allowed to just toss people in jail for being a hippy and talking about how the government sucks so he decided that drugs should have much harsher penalties. The people at the top knew weed wasn't actually that dangerous but they really didn't like people being all "war is murder" and stuff so they went along with it, and the sentiment slowly trickled down and then all the regular conservative voting public was like "YEA, WEED IS THE DEVIL" and that train of thought has really only just started going away as they start to die off. crack was turned against inner-city black people the same way, except the rich whiteys loved cocaine a bunch so they were like "well what if we just make the crack MEGA MEGA illegal but keep cocaine a slap on the wrist".
