I think that was her point - minorities are treated like adults and face adult consequences as preteens while these manchildren can do whatever the gently caress and face no consequences whatsoever.

Yes, she does point that out as I said. But then she goes right back to addressing the Milo lost boys as, well, "boys". When she describes them in a derogatory way, she does so not in adult terms but in terms that connote naivete, youth, etc. She does not say that these are men who are making the conscious decision to do and support bad and stupid things; she says that they are painfully young, that they are pranking, and so on. They are only just now becoming aware that these games are deadly real, she writes. Yes, if you read the whole article and can grasp even a hint of nuance you can draw from that derision for this perspective - if you want. But if you skim it or read it at face value, to include its very title, these grown men who are consciously and willfully allying themselves with an ideology against which the United States fought a World War are presented as pimply faced adorable-for-their-innocence nerds who don't know no better aww shucks. It's all well and good to paint Milo as the bad guy, but he is one white man around which a whole bunch of other white men are choosing to congregate - and these people are not portrayed as the bad guys they are but as hoodwinked teenagers who done got the wool pulled over their innocent eyes. Down with that sort of thing. If they are old enough to die in a ditch ostensibly for their country then they are old enough to otherwise be held accountable for their actions, beliefs, and words.

My personal lukewarm take on this article is that it's one more drop in the ocean of cultural narrative that asserts college-age people are "kids". It addresses it somewhat in pointing out that minorities are frequently treated as adults, but it still misses the point. These people on both sides of the issue, even if they are thin-skinned Internet posters, are grown-rear end adults. That they are woefully unprepared, as the author suggests, is not relevant to anything. They are old enough to be drafted to go die in a trench somewhere. They should not be treated as naive or sympathetic anymore than your racist uncle at Thanksgiving should be.

in the sense of never having been forced by the reality that they live in to face up to things like "consequences for their actions" the lost boys in that article are absolutely 100% kids and so are a lot of young adults in similar situations jesus christ it's not about what might happen to them (drafted into the army) it's about what life _has actually thrown at them_ how can you not understand that?

But nowhere in the Pokémon canon exist the moments of maturity, complexity and artistic achievement that Digimon, at its best, has offered its fans. In seriousness, this seems to me like a really dumb defense. Every major religion asserts that people of their age are capable of moral judgment, and every country in the world asserts that they are adults with adult legal and moral responsibilities. People their age are entirely capable and should be expected to be good and ideally productive citizens. And I'm not talking about the odd historical prodigy like John D. Rockefeller or World War 1's Captain Albert Ball, VC, DSO & Two Bars, MC, or modern day titans like Gates and Zuckerberg. At age twenty you have people in contemporary militaries being responsible for life-or-death decisions that affect themselves and others, millions of dollars of military hardware, and a battery of customs, courtesies, and traditions that they execute and perpetuate on a daily basis. You have people that age working public service and private enterprise jobs in all kinds of sectors, contributing to the national and world economies, paying their taxes, and somehow managing not to spout off fascist rhetoric. This is not an unreasonable expectation. The question here should not be what their lives have subjected them to but what minimum of capability and decorum they can and should be expected to demonstrate on a daily basis.
