This was a great chapter, and exactly what I wanted in a sequel to the first installment. It checked all the boxes that made the first one a great movie in my eyes, and really delved further into the John Wick mythos. I really enjoyed how the beginning of the movie places John at the end of his confrontation with the Russian mob. The Russians know he's pissed, they know he's coming, and they've basically accepted their fate. John shows up, kills a few people, walks in the de facto leader's office, and says "It's over." That part cemented what the events in the first movie were motivated by. Vengeance and Personal Vandetta, plain and simple. He walks away, he's made his point, and he got his car back. I enjoyed that this chapter fleshed out more of what happens inside the world John Wick left behind, his absence left a vacuum that a lot of young blood is trying to fill. Santino is a different villain, one who uses the code to manipulate John's actions, and John knows it. Santino operates inside of the system, he knows the boundaries. John, while not exactly ignorant of the laws doesn't see himself as a part of the society any longer. Which is why I feel the scene at the beginning when he re-cements his belongings in his basement floor reinforces this, he wants nothing to do with the world he spent so much time in any longer. Winston is a great character that has always been an observer that facilitates the sanctuary of such an environment. Like everyone else, he is bound by the code and can't change the verdict John is subjected to. He is neutral but personally biased. I'll be interested to see how this cognitive dissonance plays out. I'm excited for chapter 3.

I wonder if there's a little more to the fact that "the manager is always in" than meets the eye. Like, is there some reason why Winston can't leave Continental grounds(except with a huge escort, as we see at the end)? Like he pissed off someone really powerful and he knows he wouldn't be safe anywhere except inside the Continental? I think there's decent chance Chapter 3 ends up being less about Winston helping Wick, and more about Wick deciding to come back to save Winton's rear end. I love how fun it is to nerd out over the world that exists in these movies.

Yeah, the events of the first movie are not Wick going "the Russian mob needs to die". He wanted three guys (and his car) and when those three were dead and his car was returned then nobody else needed to suffer. The huge body count was only from people directly throwing themselves at Wick to protect those three idiots and the car. Kevin Nash for instance, he was spared because he was just part of general night club security, not protecting Wick's targets directly.

And the last shootout at the docks only happens because Viggo, in an act of spite, kills Marcus and taunts John about it. He finally accepted that his son was going to die, but couldn't quite let it go, even though his son was completely useless. I kind of hope that becomes Alfie Allen's gimmick.

So its probably something along the lines of what you're saying but there's plenty of room for creative interpretation there.

WarpedLichen posted:Loved the movie but the action definitely breaks the suspension of disbelief more than the first one did. Like others said, all the barely missed shots, the bullet proof suit jacket, and the overly calm civilians seemed too hammy to me. The ultimate punchline in the film is that everyone is vaguely aware and accepting of the secret society. Civilians try to avoid the fire fights, for sure, but they're not all that bothered by assassins killing each other. Though that does make the decision to use a deliberately outdated system for handing out new contracts a little strange. Why worry about electronic surveillance when you're already in control of the world? Snowglobe of Doom posted:Time to get learnt on some art history, motherfuckers! This is an excellent post.

To be fair, if the action scene doesn't last very long you wouldn't expect law enforcement to arrive immediately. In reality it can take quite a while for something to be noticed, then reported, and then have someone be dispatched. Movies and TV shows always have different ideas of when the law shows up. Some have insta-cops and some seem to exist in lawless wildlands.

Some have insta-cops and some seem to exist in lawless wildlands. If 3 or 4 people call the police and say "There is a gun fight happening in a club/church parking lot/public area" the police will be there in a matter of minutes. Doesn't matter what city. I imagine they could actually get held down by private security, but not for more than a few minutes. Also, I haven't seen anybody mention this as far as neat plot details in Chapter 2, but I like how they much detail they put into showing how useful the services at The Continental are to a world-class hitman: he's got access to a custom tailored bullet-proof suit, extremely detailed blueprints to make plans with, a gun sommelier, and they're basically franchises so Wick seemed to be able to enjoy access to these things world-wide. I think it's a fair point to say it's not quite as riveting a plot point as a dead puppy (and of course I don't mean that sarcastically, I think it was great character motivation in the first movie) but after seeing Chapter 2 again, I enjoyed it even more. It's a solid ending; Wick is officially cast out of the world he's been fighting to leave, and they did a good job of showing what the benefits of that world meant to those allowed access to them. If/when they do Chapter 3, it's probably going to be brutal. They escalated the violence quite bit in this with the knives and the shotguns. I enjoyed this but it definitely suffered from the "mooks don't exist until they come into frame" problem. No one just takes a shot at decent range. The first one used the layout of the nightclub to accomplish this, etc, but this just pretends their AI doesn't kick on til they're on camera.

Yeah, I was a little disappointed by how loose the action was compared to the first movie. There were just a few too many moments where Wick really should have been shot. He was out in the open often enough for the mooks to have a chance to do so, and then they just...wouldn't. They would just wait too long for their turn to get shot, or they would just run at him and get judo tossed and/or shot. The action in 2 was still far better than just about any other movie out there, but nothing matched the nightclub scene in 1. It's pretty much perfect.

Oh future twist Winston had Helen killed, probably by Dafoe. Helen was an associate of Winston's and was one of the two placed to protect/watch JW. When Winston wanted JW brought back into play, she refused. Winston is being set up as the biggest bad of the series, and what is the worst thing to happen to JW? I base this entirely on the failure of the suicide attempt + other things. One thing that really doesn't add up is why Theon had no idea who "The Man, The Legend, The Motherfucking Myth" was. Unless he did. Or it is retconned. drat good movies, keep it up.

Collateral posted:Oh future twist 1) Winston is one of the only people in the entire Illuminati Crime World who seems to fully understand the absolute, biblical level, folly in crossing John Wick. Others sort of understand, but only Winston makes it clear that it's so much worse than they thought. Viggo sort of knew, but then he went and crossed John Wick with the thought he could get away with it. Winston would have to be very stupid to think he was the exception. If I had to guess, Winston is a relative of either John Wick or Helen. The way he actually relishes John destroying those who cross him is too visceral. Maybe if he was John's mentor or something. 2)John Wick was out of the Assassin game for over 5 years, happily married to his wife. Since Theon was pretty young when he hosed with the wrong man it's not that unreasonable that he wouldn't know who John Wick was. I'm sure even hard core Russian gangsters who contract with John Wick try and raise their kids without fully immersing them in the world of Illuminati hit men. Plus given John's well earned reputation, his isn't a name people are going to be too eager to mention, like the Boogeyman.

The impression is that John Wick and Viggo laid the groundwork, and Wick left before Viggo brought the rest of his people over from whereever his base of operations was that he was ditching off to at the end of #1 before Wick caught up to him.

The opening sequence was amazing but made little sense to me. As soon as Wick called he should've ordered the car released. He knew Wick was coming. He had a huge smuggling operation about to occur to clear everything out in case Wick was coming. Be the first to extend the branch. Also, I get the feeling that the AssCoins they were loading up weren't entirely legit. Why else have the scene with the coin craftsman in the garden? Since coins are apparently produced and distributed by the consulate, that would indicate that they are indeed a reputation system rather than strictly fiducial. If a family was indeed creating counterfeits in order to sway more freelancers that would likely grievously upset the detente that is represented by the high table.
