Polygon called it "The hardest Zelda game ever made" which is awesome, but also means I may be throwing some controllers around.

That's encouraging but let's all have a gentle reminder that Polygon is worse at games than babies, epileptics, and most varieties of fish.

Please do not throw an expensive bit of easily shattered technology around. The nintendium mines are running dangerously low and newer Nintendo items have to be made out of weaker alloys

Mm. Can't blame you.

I mean, I had one and loved it but I sold mine to a goon awhile back and funded most of my Switch with it.

Anyways, I guess at this point I should not be shocked that Nintendo manages to make Zelda amazing, but with all this game was trying to accomplish I guess the jaded gamer in me figured they would fail. Sounds like that isn't the case.

Metro's preview makes it sound surprisingly simulationist and I'm kinda into that:

http://metro.co.uk/2017/02/24/the-legend-of-zelda-breath-of-the-wild-hands-on-preview-eye-opener-6470487/

quote:

Having just completed it, we couldn’t help but think of Horizon Zero Dawn while playing Breath Of The Wild, and how simplistic it now seems compared to Zelda. You also have a bow in Breath Of The Wild, but you have to account for how arrows arc through the air, rather than it just acting like a low-tech sniper rifle. Boomerangs have to be caught manually on their return and the best way to defeat the skeletons that appear at night is to chop of their head and punt it into a river, like a goalkeeper trying to make a clearance.

This is just the first five hours, and we still haven’t even mentioned the stealth (there’s an onscreen indicator to show how much sound you’re making) or the horse-riding where you have to catch horses yourself and tame them (by praising them when they do what you tell them). You can have five horses at a time that you keep in a stable, and each has their own unique stats and can be individually named.

Did... did he use a boomerang as a melee weapon? That's pretty sweet.

My friend who watched me play Skyrim back when it came out named the horse I was riding around on "Bucket" for some reason and she was very sad when Bucket got killed by a dragon, so now I name all my mounts Bucket in honor of that noble steed.

Yep! He also gets struck by lightning and mentions that it can strike metal objects. Meaning you can throw boomerangs as lightning rods. This'll probably also allow for loving sick master sword power moves

At this point I'm just waiting for the Digital Foundry comparison between the Wii U and Switch versions. I'll be getting this ASAP if the Wii U version runs at a stable framerate and has better color saturation than it did at E3; otherwise, I'm enough of a graphics baby that I'll probably wait a few months until I get around to buying a Switch.

I'm not even sure which I'd rather be the case. Nier: Automata comes out a few days after Breath of the Wild and I'm gonna want to play that immediately, too. This is a ridiculous time full of good games, everyone.

Man I can't believe that all of the promotional material and prerelease videos and stuff show Link in his blue ainu inspired clothing instead of the traditional green tunic. It's a little thing but Nintendo always banks on the recognition of its properties and to change it so drastically took some balls.
It's like putting Mario in a brown button up and sensible tan slacks, no red cap.

Friendly reminder of Polygon's history with game difficulty

I can't help but still be a bit skeptical because it all seems to perfect, these previews are describing too much of exactly what I've wanted from Zelda for years and more. Hell, what I've wanted from video games in general for years. There has to be a catch somewhere.

I know that everyone is hitting me with "This is Polygon we're talking about"

but

This is Zelda we're talking about

Is it really that far-fetched to assume that this is actually the hardest Zelda game ever? Except maybe the NES titles, Zelda hasn't exactly been a challenging game series. Fun, yes. Challenging, no.

Polygon isn't the only outlet that said it's hard so it's not really some unbelievable claim

I don't think it's going to be a bad game but there is quite a bit shown that should cause at least some management of expectations. For example, all this sounds cool until you've dealt with it for 5-10 hours:

Weapon Durability
Catching or retrieving thrown weapons
Inventory Management
Survivalist elements, like campfires going out in the rain

The idea of climbing just about anything sounds great except it means climbing most things is probably going to be pointless and areas where you need to climb will be clearly highlighted or part of a puzzle. Also from the few videos I've seen the landscape looks very bland, with most of the color and variation coming from stuff far in the distance that may not even be reachable.

Edit:
Also the Easy Allies preview noted its got performance problems on the Switch.

The catch is nobody was allowed to sleep in their homes during the development of this game.

Aonuma hasn't seen his son in four years.
