Well, hey, on the flip side in peaceful protests multiple Republican state legislators are proposing bullshit restrictions on public assembly (ostensibly to discourage "riots" and such). Does anyone have any ideas for how we could bring this up with our locals to try and organize opposition to such legislation? Petitions? Organized calling or office visits?

Just keep peacefully protesting until they claim you should be held accountable for one or two people breaking a couple things at the protest and seize your home or charge you with a felony, because that is all the left wants to do so far

Personally I'm extremely skeptical of calling and office visits and petitions. Especially if the person you're calling or petitioning is a republican or centrist.

I think that's a fair thing to be skeptical about. Legitimate question, then: do you think it's not worth bothering with since we're not equipped to address it directly? Or would it be more productive to try and address at the city level, i.e. try to organize pressure on mayors/city councils/etc. to speak out against such legislation and refuse to enforce?

Personally we've been protesting outside our local state congressmans office every week and he refuses to see us. He also has canceled his last 3 town halls that he was going to hold because of "time constraints" and has suspended them indefinitely. He was using them to answer softball questions before we started going.

Still 0% chance of voting him out.

Yeah, protests feel like something that should give a show of force of an opinion, but so much of the voting populace is so checked out that they simply don't care or are actively hostile by default, returning to their sports team voting every election cycle

I feel like some of the initiatives DSA has been getting behind are useful, going after precise real issues that can be presented in a way where the traditional partisanship thats been drilled into people is less effective so they might actually think about it

Next time he cancels you should set up a "people's town hall" nearby scheduled at the same time. Be loud & advertise. Make it clear that if he cancels you will have a place for people to voice their concerns to each other, since the one who is supposed to be leading... isn't.

I think this, plus protests where you generate enough noise to get in the news are probably the most effective tactic. Even democratic politicians are avoiding engaging their constituents right now. Where I live, even city councils and county and port commissions are starting to become censored. Public being kicked for 'executive' sessions while developers get to stay in the meeting. Videos recorded for the public to see are being edited with the public comment portions removed or changed. This doesn't begin and end with our national elected officials. People are taking Trump's behaviors and playing them out locally as well.

A county commissioner here claimed his employees were lying to him and providing him 'alternate facts' and he was going to have someone get him the 'real' facts.

Bonus points:
  • Have someone actually take notes and then put them online and share the hell out of them.
  • If there are any action items that would need to happen to fix the problem, go to who would need to do the drat thing and tell them to do the drat thing. Even if they say no, get it recorded that you acted on the people's behalf.
  • *+~super extra bonus points~+* if you do the above, get contact information for people who ask for things to get done, and then contact them before you act on their behalf and ask if they would like to come, and if they know anyone else who would like to be represented. That is what democracy looks like, after all.

Edit: if the people's town hall stays orderly it will look REALLY REALLY GOOD. Let people voice their opinions but if a lot of people show up be prepared to limit talking time so as to let others have their say. I mention "looking good" because if you are going to do more of these, people won't show up if they don't think it's worthwhile.

The discussion about diversity (a topic of fundamental importance) a few pages ago gave me an idea.

Does anyone's DSA chapter have an outreach committee? My idea for the goals of such a community include:
-Establishing connections with minority advocacy organizations, listening to their concerns, and facilitating the involvement of DSA members in their activities.
-Organizing group volunteering efforts that have a direct impact in the lives of marginalized populations (shelters, food banks, naral, etc.)
-Directing campaigns to expand the public presence of the DSA while promoting the ideals of socialism. (Maybe pamphleting?)
-Conducting communication training sessions.
And, hopefully, as a byproduct
-Increasing the representation of minorities within of the DSA and promoting a culture of diversity and inclusion.

I'm a new DSA member so such committees may already exist and I just don't know about them, in which case the problem might be that my chapter's committee isn't promoting themselves as well as they could be. A cursory google search didn't reveal much.

Any input?

Our new chapter has an outreach committee that plans to do those things. I think it is a pretty common idea, and a pretty good one!

Keep coming up with stuff like this and they'll put you in charge of the chapter. :getin: Our membership committee is just getting itself together but I think they will be including outreach in their realm with input from racial justice, soc-fem, and LGBT committees.

One of my concerns has been with privacy and protecting especially our already vulnerable marginalized members but this new bullshit with threatening protestors has increased everyone else's awareness pretty quickly. I just started learning to use Slack dammit.

The gun issue is a diversionary tactic employed by the elites and not worth expending political capital on. We should focus our efforts on enfranchising the population. In the process, a more democratic society would have civilized gun control laws at least according to current polling data.

Edit: Bare arms or don't bare arms, but leave the gun debate to the liberals who love to chase squirrels while the country burns under fascist rule.

Someone in this thread, I think, had mentioned a resource folder containing copy and basic images for creating chapter flyers etc. Am I dreaming that? Because our chapter is looking to do some filtering at an upcoming event and wants to be able to provide a flyer with some city-specific inflection.

I'm at new members school at Austin DSA and starting to think this chapter is a waste of time. The chairs have no interest in organizing direct action led by the DSA. They just want to funnel people into other groups and send members to events organized by other groups. I can't get a satisfactory answer on why I should be a member of this chapter rather than joining groups that work on the issues I care about.
