How'd the B4 cope with the heat. My mazda made it from western sydney to the upper mountains but wasn't happy after Lawson. On the motorway the temp was reading 49 in my car and it had only dropped to 39 through lawson. Anytime I lifted off the throttle it'd judder a little like I'd let off the throttle in first but happened regardless of gear. I put it down to poo poo being hot as balls though

The Liberty? It hated it. Threatened to melt down on Old Bathurst Rd (only started driving from Emu Plains too) and drat thing was reading 50C outside temp as I passed Warrimoo. Was NOT a happy car to say the least. Saw a few other cars that were even less happy tho and a blown radiator or two.

Not like the WRX's would do any better, they show heat stress signs at Lapstone at over 42C.

It's days like this I'm glad I don't have to do that run frequently. Last night my little Corolla powered all the way up to Katoomba with the air con blasting and the temp gage didn't move. Wish there was a bit more movement in the air tonight, it's fuckin' roasting inside

Yeah I'm in the mountains. There was several cars on both the m7 and m4 that appeared to have quit in protest however once I got to Warimoo it was only showing 46 as a temperature. I washed my car to reward it for making it home but I don't think I've ever driven it in this sort of heat before so it did alright

There was several buses stopped on the M1 with the engine covers open and steam billowing out.

My 180 was at 100c the whole m1 with the AC on. The second I hit traffic the AC just gave up.

Was at regular operating temp with it off and was smashing boost so I think she will be good for the next track day.

It's way too hot to do anything though.

And somehow today was even loving worse and I saw a few cars blown up in the wandering today. And a couple of them being towed. There's going to be some busy mechanics in the next week fixing broken engines I'm guessing.



Anyone that says climate change isnt real is going to be punched for being stupid - This just simply beyond belief.



The fix for the wagon



What a bitch of a job getting it on the trailer @ 48C. 5 minutes and I was just pissing sweat. However now I have the harness and the parts needed to fix the wagon. Hopefully will be a bit cooler.... which wont be saying much. 39C would be welcome relief from this hellwave

So after dragging the half cut off the trailer and some disassembly....





We then tip it back over....





Looks like there was A-Pillar rust so I suspect the shell was not good anyway

So the ECU, harness and some other bits I noticed the red wagon was missing. Also... the ECU I've just worked out is the first of the flashables AND I'm going to convert the red wagon to ODBII..... Awww yisssss!

Also the cluster is an odd one. Possible STI ECCU as well, looks like need to do a numbers check to confirm exactly what I have. Small repair to the ECU wiring required but no biggie, looks like a piggyback was installed.

Yeah, which is why I'm rather happy the ECU is reflashable. I do need to change turbos from the TD05 it has for the 99 manifold to fit so this will make at least getting the engine happy easier. I *think* I'll go for a TD04 just to get it all going and then work it out from there.

I'm pretty sure the gearbox is a 96 and that will NOT take much power. The 99 got a gearbox that wasnt glass, the earlier ones are terrible, thence to get it going I really dont want the kind of boost the motor can take.

OKay so..... today was a poo poo of a day to start - the data centre air con blew out on the weekend so I spent the morning from 5:30am resurrecting DA CLOUD but review and a pay rise followed and I been told that I *really* need to watch my days accruced leave as I have a habit just not using any... i"m approaching the legal accrued limit so I will have to take a mandatory week off... or at least take a mental health day and use some of the huge amount of sick days I have accruced. Nice problem to have. And also the weather finally stopped being a blast furnace so I hosed off early and hit the bike for 80kms.

A good cuppa, a cat and chillaxing. I'm a simple man, I cant complain.

Next weekend, I'm doing some competitive cycling. I am sooo not fit right now but eh. 83kms flat stick is gonna huuuuuurt either way, just means I'll do it slower :) - so I guess this'll just be a chat thread until I that race is done. Or where I plot the cat encloseure. Or something.

I reckon I can do it if I have a rattle gun and I can get it between the rad and the harmonic balancer. Really don't feel like dropping my coolant and pulling the radiator tho.

If I remember correctly, there's not much chance of getting anything down to the crank pulley with the radiator in. Buuuut then again, been a while since I looked under a 180SX's bonnet.



Ummm.... yeah I miiiiight need to be careful, it's not like spiders in Aust are harmless ones.



So anyway, to get the existing loom out, I need to take the guards off and that also meant the bumper had to come off. And I see this butchered attempt at a cold air intake. Oooookay.



Driver's side guard off...... hmmmm. Not the original panel for sure. The passenger side was original so....



It's had a mild front end crash early in it's life, given the age of the panel's stickers.



Not much to worry about. I think I'll make a note to give it a clean up.



One of the things I've been wondering about is if the car has been resprayed. Probably not, there's enough signs it's always been red and there has been no respray. A few other scars but nothing too bad. I can see why the GC's are so light, there's just not as much metal everywhere as a GD would have.



Began to have a look exactly what the suspensin was. It's lower than stock, springs dont appear to be cut. Seems to be some sort of stock struts.



Huh. Interesting - no GF8 wagon has alloy control arms. Someone has contverted to at least GC STI in the past... that would explain the wider track.

Looking at the silastic gaskets, I suspect I'll be pulling the motor out. Someone has half assed a rebuild for sure.

GC STI LCAs are (in my experience) identical track to a GG WRX wagon and GF wagon. Those look like GC STI front endlinks to me.

GD STI LCAs are wider.

Same goes for the lateral links, are those the original 'taco' design?

How the gently caress do you still have paint on your swaybars after all these years? No wonder Whiteline reacts to my complaints of corrosion-induced death on all their products with a picture of a confused puppy. Give me spiders any day.

Yeah well, you can guess how "smart" they were with the way the wiring was butchered.





Half cut wiring out and stored. So to recap, it's a MY99 loom so I'm just swapping it and the dash / ECU. Speakign of the ECU....

Annnnd there's my locknut issue. Or was. One slightly too small to slip over it air tool socket, smash it on and viola.



For my own notes - MY95 five speed, requires 4.111 rear diff. Made of glass. I'm considering throwing in the MY06 WRX five speed diff / axles / gearbox from the previously posted MY06 wagon.

So after I get the dashboard out I can now see just how butchered the harness actu.....

Hm, thinking... if you don't care about running anything other than engine stuff, how little wiring harness is needed? I'm thinking of building an engine-dyno-only GD ECU setup in the next year or so... or once I have the engine dyno going.

Basically whatever connects to the two blocks under the fuse box and whatever else you want to have active like fuel pump etc. Also you can cut a huge amount of length out of a lot of wiring, given that for some odd reason the fuse box section of the harness goes from the drivers side footwell, around the nose and up under the passenger side from guard.

Want a pre butchered harness to have a look through? :D

Dreaming of Shock Diamonds


Would it be worth it to use that harness to build a wiring and sensor diagnostic tool? Harvest the factory connectors, etc?

I've started building a few RX7 specific ones since a bad ignition or fuel wire can cost hours to hunt down.

Edit: To clarify, you know healthy voltages and resistance ranges for all sensors. Either feed each sensor wire into a simple bastardized meter on a big selector switch and go through wire by wire, or get fancy and feed in into an Arduino with appropriate shields. Even fancier and for the ECU ignition and fuel injector outputs, you can get an Arduino shield with a mic port (O-scope).
