I'm really not the person to ask tbh, because I tend to believe that institutional intertia is already and will continue to stymie the vast majority of what trump [see: bannon] wants to actually accomplish.

He's going to cut some regs, make some people some money, crash the thing into a wall and we'll reset like we've done since WW2. Or we'll all die i guess.

If Trump sufficiently takes over the Republican brand that people turn out against any Republican they can, that might be a viable path for the Democrats to start regaining some ground at the state level.

Of course in a two party system, when one party is completely on the ropes, the only two things that can happen are that it bounces back or dies and a new party absorbs its base and takes its place, so more than likely the Democrats are due to bounce back no matter what they do. That might be why there's such a fight to take control of the ruins of the party at the moment, since whoever's in place to ride the anti-Trump backlash back into power has a good shot at their agenda.

All this assumes that the Trump era will play out like American politics mostly has for the last few decades, of course. Maybe he'll outlaw the Democrats or limit voting rights to permanently cripple them or just incinerate us all in nuclear hellfire while we bicker.

the issue is that if each side goes further towards the extreme, what happens to the middle and where do most of those people go because clearly if a lot of them were ok voting for an orange scam artist fascist who wants to gently caress his daughter, so presumably it was really a matter of policy over personality

american society faces an issue where a more socialist government could work, but there's not enough evidence of it at such a massive scale and you have to convince the general electorate to take that leap. i mean the dems wanted to raise minimum wage and tax rich corporations -- i think bernie's message carried into the dem platform well enough despite the anti-trump rhetoric -- but that wasn't good enough for people because they want to hear about they can actually get the jobs despite the fact that those jobs are never coming back, at least not in mass numbers.

really it comes down to changing american society to accept that most americans are not going to be employed in 20 years and there's nothing they can do about it so they may as well get ready to accept a ubi and sit on their rear end watching tv all day as we devolve into a wall-e universe

Man if North Korea actually attacked South Korea and especially if they did it with a nuclear bomb China would drop them like a molten rock.

NK on their own don't have enough WMDs for some kind of MAD or spiteful world destruction and nobody wants to get their country blown to pieces backing them. They're only useful to China as a distraction and buffer state and that usefulness goes right out the window in the event of them starting an actual war.

I mean I guess sooner or later something's going to have to happen with North Korea, hard to imagine they'll just stay like they are forever, but the players involved would have to massively gently caress up their response for it to escalate beyond loving up just the Korean peninsula and neighbouring regions of China.
