There's the potential for interesting conflict and good storytelling.

Not really for the homophobia argument, ME2 and 3 established that cloning - including the mixing of DNA from multiple sources - is a thing in this setting. Traynor alludes to it a lot when romanced, that she wants to settle down and raise a family with Shepard.

Which isn't at all unfeasible. Fertilizing an egg with DNA from another egg, thus allowing two women to have a biological child together, is something that's within reach today.

It would work even better if the arks started after the Reapers conquered Earth, or maybe even after they took Thessia. If you believe you might be the last humans in the universe, the pressure to procreate would be even bigger. And it's less likely that they have an easy solution on board, like a million fertilized eggs that only need to be transplanted into willing women.

Speaking about messing up, is there a guide out there for maximizing the gently caress-ups you can do in ME2 (particularly with Suicide Mission deaths), with still Shepard surviving for ME3?

My first time playing ME3 was obviously with a ~perfect~ save with everyone alive and poo poo, but now I want to see the other side of the coin. I already played ME1 and let Wrex die, which I know affects a lot, and I'm about to play ME2 again.

I'm one of these gay players myself. It would have forced them to go deeper into detail for the gay/interspecies relationships imho, preventing basically genderless romances like Josephine's in DA:I.

Agreed. Supposing a homophobic society is 90% likely to result in a ham-fisted "Homophobia is bad!" sermon. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, and the grog rage would be its own reward, I do think it's an unnecessary minefield that Bioware will avoid because they typically like to play it safe.

Still holding out for something like Dick Ryder being canonically gay when you play as Sarah, though. Grog rage is delicious.

Do you want to just have the minimum number of import characters from the suicide mission or do you want to try maximizing sacrifices in ME3 as well. Because for maximum Mass Effect 3 suffering, I think you would need Tali or Legion, Mordin, Grunt, Jack and Morinth to import. Otherwise, I think you could be satisfied with

Sell Legion, don't wake Grunt, choose Morinth, don't do Zaeed's loyalty

No armor, Jack Dies
Remaining: Kasumi, Thane, Tali, Garrus, Zaeed, Morinth, Mordin, Miranda, Jacob

No shields, Kasumi dies
Remaining: Thane, Tali, Garrus, Zaeed, Morinth, Mordin, Miranda, Jacob

No weapons, Thane Dies
Remaining: Tali, Garrus, Zaeed, Morinth, Mordin, Miranda, Jacob

Jacob for Vents, Jacob Dies
Tali, Garrus, Zaeed, Morinth, Mordin, Miranda

Long Walk: Miranda:
Bring Mordin and Morinth, lose Mordin
Edit: Forgot fire team leader: Send Tali--she'll die.
Remaining: Garrus, Zaeed, Morinth, Miranda

Escort: Send no escort--Crew will die
Remaining: Garrus, Zaeed, Morinth, Miranda

Take Garrus and Miranda to final fight: They die
Zaeed will hold the line hard enough to keep Morinth alive.

Shepard should survive with help from Morinth and Zaeed. Wake up Grunt and go on Zaeed's loyalty to get Zaeed killed. Now you have Grunt and Morinth. Don't do Grunt's loyalty and both will die in ME3.

In case it wasn't obvious if you do this it's critical to wake Grunt only after you complete the final mission but before doing Zaeed's loyalty, as you will not have the option of killing Zaeed if doing so would bring you <2 living squadmates.

You really have to keep Tali alive though because her death in ME3 is so amazing.

Yeah, the guys with the most impressive ME3 deaths are some of the hardest to keep alive in ME2, so I'm going over the flowchart to see what would be a good set up. You'd need armor on the ship to keep Jack alive so she can die when you miss Grissom Academy. Sending a loyal Mordin on the escort and bringing a loyal Tali to the final fight would keep them alive so they can suffer your treachery later. Thane dies in ME3 no matter what, but if he's already dead things end up being worse all around, so he gets the Vents.

That's good enough, I only want to keep Thane and Mordin alive, one for romance shenanigans and the other for the ME3 Tuchanka mission. I'm fine with the rest dying.

I forgot you could kill Zaeed on his loyalty mission! I have to go with the Paragon path (saving the hostages) right? That detail about Grunt is important, thanks a lot

Check out the flowchart to see what kind of revisions you might want to make. Mordin's easiest to save if he's a loyal escort or you bring him to the final fight, while Thane is super easy to get killed if you don't have the weapons upgrade or bring on a botched Long Walk.

No solution that results in Zaeed predeceasing any other crew member is optimal. Won't it work just as well if you leave Grunt permanently in the tank and take Zaeed and Morinth into the third game?

Fair enough. It's just bullshit that I would prefer not follow me into my escapist entertainment.

Also, I don't see that it's necessarily problematic that some relationships not be distinctly gendered; there are plenty of people who aren't hung up on that. It looks like they've settled on having a solely same-sex option and a few bi options, which should suit a range of tastes.
