I think we should call the Avengers.

I liked it. It's nasty in a way not many war films are; probably the closest we'll ever get to Dario Argento directing a WW2 movie.

Edit: Now that I think about it, Fulci would probably have been a better comparison.

I liked everything I've seen that was nominated for best picture - I enjoyed Hacksaw Ridge, Arrival, Manchester by the Sea, and Hell or High Water - but the only one that cracks my top ten for the year is Moonlight, and just barely.

Hacksaw Ridge was really solid classical war movie style filmmaking but with Gibson's distinctly modern flair for portraying gruesome violence - I said it in Gen Chat, but I honestly think he might be one of the best directors of violence ever. The cinematography and editing were very good, Andrew Garfield and Hugo Weaving were both great, and it was nice to see a war movie that at least somewhat valorizes nonviolence. The ending was a little clumsy but that was my only real complaint.

I appreciate hearing your opinions. I can see where you're coming from, but the violence to me was over the top to the point of parody/comedy. Kung Fu grenade kick included.

Hugo Weaving was low key the best part of the film. I thought his performance was great.

Hugo Weaving deserves an Oscar nod for his role, no doubt. Shame he didn't get it. The violence was so insane and over the top, like Tropic Thunder levels of absurd.

They haven't aired yet but we already have a loser. Greg P Russell was part of a group nominated in the Sound Mixing category for 13 Hours but the Academy has rescinded his nomination due to some campaigning that was against the rules.

Anyone see the Live Action Shorts? I thought it was a solid field; no real stand-outs, and not really any bad ones. Probably any one of them could win, outside of Timecode (it's more of a high-concept joke short). If people vote political I'd bet Ennemis Intérieures wins (though it very badly fumbles at the end), and I think I'd like to see Mindenki (Sing) take it. Silent Nights could have easily been stretched to a feature that I'd watch.

As for animated, I'd bet Borrowed Time wins because it's Pixar and also very good (I haven't seen all of the competition, though).

I liked all of the best picture noms I've seen but Hacksaw would definitely be at the bottom. I liked Weaving and some of the camerawork enough to call it a net positive but it feels very made for TV before the combat scenes which just get silly. A lot of people deflect any criticism by saying "crazier stuff really happened to the guy!" but it's a problem with the presentation more than anything. I'm iffy on Garfield's performance and baffled he got nominated.

One thing on that video...I have a fairly sophisticated method to predict what films will win Best Picture (I used to bet heavily on them), and one thing I was playing around with was a qualitative "home field" addition to certain films. Birdman, La La Land, even Boyhood would get "home field" bumps because they're essentially movies that play on the home field. poo poo even Crash could have some home field, because its set in Los Angeles, where a lot of voters reside. I never could quite crack the bonus, though, because the correlation was a little hazy (a lot of the films do not win).

I tend to think that the awards are probably really predictable if you understand the Oscar's are a reflection of what the industry thinks of itself. There's three key things:
- They really think movies go along way towards promoting social justice issues, so if you can get somebody on-stage for two minutes to talk about a cause du jour, than you've really done your part.

- They really loving love movies about show-business itself

- They believe that the height of acting is a pretty person playing an ugly person.

So if, you look at the ballot and imagine a slate of awards winners that satisfies all the conditions, then you'll probably have a good idea who will win what. The only problem really is probably identifying what category of social justice some movies belong to. I'm inclined to think that they view all movies with a predominantly black cast as "black people" movies. So for example this year, a movie like Hidden Figures might ordinarily be considered a "women are marginalized in the workplace movie", and thus be a lock for an award. However, since the top 3 billed actresses are all black, so it'll probably be viewed a "black people" film, and thus is competing against Fences for awards. Viola Davis is probably getting Best Supporting Actress, so I wouldn't count on Hidden Figures getting anything. Moonlight is likely in the same boat. It might be gay enough to get a screenplay nod, but it's probably firmly in the "black people" category.

I think the important thing is that the awards aren't given independent of other awards. If we get to the end of the evening and La La Land hasn't won anything, then it's a virtual lock for Best Picture, to satisfy the Hollywood loving Hollywood constraint. On the other hand, if it wins Best Director or something, the the field is a lot more open.

Oh, I agree, it's extremely over the top. But I think that was the intention. Trying to realistically capture warfare from the point of view of a soldier is a futile experience because the audience as neutral observer is too far removed from the events. So Gibson abandons realism in favour of showing the emotional experience: confusion, fear, anger, even brief moments of heroic levity like the grenade kick. It's like he's trying to do an expressionist rendition of battle, and while I don't think he succeeds entirely, I find the attempt admirable.

Oh, I knew you'd play the "they didn't sanitize it enough for you" card. But that wasn't the issue, because if you read my post (which doesn't look like you did, it just looks like you're annoyed because I don't like the movie you love) you'd remember that I read Northup's book before watching 12 Years a Slave. So yes, I expected all the evil and the brutality but what I didn't expect was the tone they chose to go for. The movie was dull (and it really didn't need to be, considering the excellent source material) because it felt like passion of the christ: slavery edition.

This is not a "beautiful film" by any means and many critics, while unanimously praising the effort, did comment that the end result was somewhat uneven. Again I don't think it deserved all the awards it got. Amour was clearly the best movie of that year, to the point where they even gave it a rare double nomination (Best Foreign Language -winner - and Best Picture) to compensate, the same way Mad Max got 200 minor oscars to make us forget that Spotlight was bad. Though you could argue that Room was the best movie of last year and you'd probably be right.

Now the 2013 Oscars weren't as controversial because no one had seen Amour and all the other nominees were inferior to 12 Years (just to name a couple, Zero Dark Thirty and Silver Linings Playbook -lol-), but my point still stands. I guess we strongly disagree!

EDIT: the essay you linked is a good watch but obviously I don't agree with it either

After finally watching Zero Dark Thirty I cannot believe it got nominated for anything. Setting aside the torture issue, it's loving boring.

Although, I think the point the movie was trying to make was that it was a POV film, letting you watch intelligence officers unreliably narrate the facts to themselves. The December 2009 Chapman base bombing is the most obvious "something bad is going to happen" sequence in film history, but all of the characters are psyched that they found a guy who is going to give up Bin Laden. Or the ending, where everyone acts like an organized murder/robbery is a big turning point, but the film itself is telling you that the facts on the ground are no different than before.

I think that was the point. But holy poo poo it's just a way too long movie with a bunch of office characters that they could have frankly cut.

I guess there's no better place to do a top 10:

1. The Innocents
2. Moonlight
3. Silence
4. The Lobster
5. 13th
6. Arrival
7. A Man Called Ove
8. La La Land
9. Love and Friendship
10. Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Honestly, there were so many great movies this year I could do a top 20. There are still plenty that I need to see, but these are the ones that have stood out the most so far.

As far as the Oscars themselves, I didn't get to see all of them this year. That's mainly due to the fact that my wife and I had a baby a couple of weeks ago. Here's the extent of what I can gather from what I have seen:

-Moonlight better win best picture, adapted screenplay, and supporting actor. Best director would be pretty sweet too.
-La La Land better not win best actor or actress, but I kinda hope it does win best score, best director, best production design, and maybe best original screenplay.
-This was a truly miserable year for animated feature films on the whole, so I'd say Kubo and the Two Strings deserves the win purely for the art style.
-Amy Adams wasn't nominated for Arrival so frankly I don't give a poo poo about who wins best actress.
-A Man Called Ove deserves to win every category for which it's nominated.
-Andrew Garfield should've been nominated for Silence instead of Hacksaw Ridge, and Ryan Gosling should've been nominated for The Nice Guys instead of La La Land. As it stands, Denzel will probably win for Fences.

Tap "A" to drink!!!

After watching Manchester this morning, I was able to see 8/9 of the Best Picture nominees. I'd rank them as follows:

Arrival
La La Land
Moonlight
Hell or High Water
Manchester
Lion
Hidden Figures
Hacksaw Ridge

I only felt that the top 3 movies were really on another level for the best picture prize. Hell or High Water / Manchester are great movies within their genre. I wouldn't have nominated the bottom three. Lion is kind of frustrating because the first half of the movie is really engaging and beautifully shot. Sunny Pawar as Young Saroo gave a good performance. I feel like once the movie switches in time to Dev Patel it loses something in the translation. The script is a lot more hurried and the pacing just goes by too quick / the ending doesn't provide the catharsis necessary to match what's happening on the screen. Hidden Figures was a mostly average to above average biopic with nothing really inspiring about it besides the acting of the leads. It falls into same genre pitfalls of other movies like it.

Personally I would have nominated The Lobster somewhere for Best Picture.

I guess if I were to make predictions:

I've said it in here but if it had just been "another war movie" I would have ignored it, in fact I did ignore it until I saw Mel Gibson was directing it so I was curious what got him out the black zone. The actual person it is based around is pretty much the only reason why I went to see it and had it not been for the ending where you are told "yes we didn't make this up" I probably would've written it off as a typical Hollywood WWII film that this time happens to star a medic who doesn't want to shoot anyone. I still say that the movie is not amazing (but at the same time I don't know why everyone says Saving Private Ryan is so amazing so whatever) but I appreciate it because it brought Doss' story to the public and I feel that stories like his should always be known because otherwise we just have action movie after action movie where we are glorifying violence. I mean, it still does glorify violence but he's a combat medic so
