I think a lot of the issue people have here is that it doesn't really have a strong message like some of the movies nominated have, it's a pretty straight forward modern day musical that leans heavily on old Hollywood for inspiration. It just doesn't help when Moonlight comes out in the same year.

The pacing of this Oscar telecast is even more snail-paced than usual. I mean, we hit the 11 o'clock hour on the East and the Dead Roll hasn't even played yet. In previous years we'd have 5-7 interpretive dance numbers to Best Musical Score and Up With People by now.
