I saw Get Out in Williamsburg with my girlfriend and it was amazing, everyone should see it immediately.

Maybe it's because I haven't been in an American theatre very often but the way people shout and clap at certain moments (and in Get Out you'll know which moments) is exhilarating and I wish people did that in the UK.

I have never been happier to see the words 'Airport'.

Is the opening weekend of Get Out poised to become some kind of cultural moment that can never be recaptured?

Assuming you went to Williamsburg Cinemas, the audiences there are more enthusiastic about the moviegoing experience than just about anywhere. I'm pretty sure it would be my theater of choice for that reason, even if it wasn't convenient and cheap.

Edit: Of course there were others, like Budd Dwyer, Adele Dazeem, Ashlee Simpson loving up on SNL. I think the reason people are freaking out so much about this is because it's ~The Oscars~.

It's amazing how well the movie threads the needle between being too sympathetic or too cruel. I wonder how big an influence it had on all the cringe humor we got in the 2000s — you can draw a pretty direct line, but I guess it's probably mostly Christopher Guest instead

I think the British Office was a watershed, it really put all the pieces together.

Also, all this talk about American Movie makes me wish Demon Lover Diary was still online. I think that's my favorite found footage horror movie.

The Hobbit movies wrecked his reputation in a big way, I think. I don't think he's ever going to get another Best Director nomination, anyway, not if he chooses crap like Mortal Engines for his projects. And honestly, hey, he's got to be nearing 60 and he ballooned up again over the past few years because he was so busy on the Hobbit poo poo. He probably sleeps on a mattress filled with $100 bills, I'm sure he's fine.

He's never struck me as the relentlessly driven type like Scorsese who, like Ridley Scott, seems like he'll just keep going until he carks it right after yelling "cut" on the set.

My introduction to it was it being played in the background of a Valentine's Day party in an episode of ER, while Carter and Lucy Knight get gored by a psycho with a butcher knife (played by David Krumholtz, I think). So I've never thought of the possibility of it being by anyone else than the Lo Fidelity Allstars.

White is a smart dude and he's occasionally written some good stuff but once he gained attention for trolling people he just sort of ran with that and most of his reviews read like barely coherent streams of consciousness where he is also incapable of praising something without bringing down something else. Of course, like with many CineD posters, it's not provable he's just trolling but it should be noted that he originally really liked The Hurt Locker and then turned on it when it turned into an Oscar nominated critical darling. It also should be noted that he is a right wing nut job to a degree that I'm surprised he hasn't shown up in Trump's cabinet.

My last memory of Dennis Miller was during the 2004 election and he somehow had an MSNBC show at the time and on this show he literally had a monkey sitting off to the side that had a button that whenever the monkey decided to push it, it would play the Howard Dean scream.

I don't think it's much of a mystery why we don't hear from him anymore.

White's commentary was largely sensible if you were able to view it through an incredibly warped sense of view. (I mean, gently caress if I agreed with his contrarianism, but I could at least usually see the lines he was drawing.) Once he got punted from the New York Films Critic Circle after confronting Steve McQueen over 12 Years a Slave, calling him a "garbage man" and accusing him of making "torture porn," he went to the National Review and just went full-on right-wing psycho.
