Did anyone look around to see if any background characters went missing after the mine caves in? The only one I noticed was that pair of people up the stairs right next to the Snack Falcon (I think one is a bird but now I'm totally forgetting). The guy on the right was gone the next morning, even though both of them had been there every day without fail before then.

Ooh also, does beating Demon Tower do anything?

I didn't talk to the pair every day but the guy talked about going somewhere before then. Presumably the cultists were expecting to come back from the mines so I don't think he's one?

And yeah, I think Molly is very likely a cultist. I couldn't find her at all in the epilogue and she got a lot of screen time to just be missing at the end like that. Also we know at the very least one of the cultists knew Mae well enough to recognize her in the dark. (by voice probably?). So Molly would make sense for that, but it could also be like her nextdoor neighbor or something.

A lot of folks in Possum Springs can recognize Mae by voice, most likely. It's a small town and Mae was a major nuisance clear through high school, and easily everyone on her street knows that that voice means trouble.

Besides that, Molly doesn't really have the motivation to be a cultist. She never worked in any of Possum Springs major industries, and she was never shown to have any of the Hot Fuzz-esque small town obsession that the rest of the cultists did. Plus, they referred to the cultists as a bunch of Dads, so there likely weren't any women who spoke up at any point during it, and if the person who did recognize Mae was Molly, she definitely would've said something.

IMO her lack of presence in the epilogue was probably a time constraint rather than anything intentional.

I wasn't really able to collect my thoughts about the game until it all hit me at once as I was drifting off to sleep last night. That was way, way creepier than I anticipated. From the trailers I had just assumed it was one guy and it was a misunderstanding, we'd all learn something at the end and hug, hah hah.

Nope.

Sacrificial cult that killed my friend and then got subsequently buried alive, with some paranormal teleportation and vision thrown in because of course. Every time one of the cult guys was on screen, from the kidnapping at Harfest to (spoilers for Gregg's and Angus' ghost-hunting routes) appearing in the window of the historical society to superhumanly chasing Mae and Angus out of the woods, it was honestly somewhat scary. That the game managed to pull off "creepy and "scary" with an art style and characters like it had is kind of amazing.

Anyways, go buy this game. I waited over two years and I would have gladly waited two more. It's stellar.

i agreed with RPS: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2017/02/27/night-in-the-woods-review/#comments

I just completed the game and a bit disappointed how short it was since I expected a few more days to go. Also I would've liked a few more events with Angus and all. The days with Mae were pretty linear as I only got to do one event and then went to sleep. Also I wanted to explore more places other than town centre, my home, underground place, and church during free roam. What is even that band game?

I would play again if it had NG+ and skipped the intro and dreams.

i hope that they'll have the money and existing assets to make a proper sequel in a year and a half or so, if they go that route. can't imagine it'll take that long since they got the engine and tons of art to work with already.

Beat it. I really liked it and related to a lot of stuff that the main characters went through, but I think the dialogue and animations could use another pass; it's very hard to tell if someone is being sarcastic or not when the dialogue all looks the same and the characters have the :3: or :v: face the entire time no matter what

Although I'm not sure I like the final reveal about her having hecked up the dudes? not in a "SHE'S TOO GOOD FOR THIS" way, but in a "she seems too passive to do something like that" way. I'm not sure why that's the endgame quibble that sticks in my mind. That and not being able to play bass over the credits. i mean it's RIGHT THERE, c'mon dudes

In regards to the ending, I have to wonder how much of the town's up-and-down prosperity was due to the Black Goat, and how much of it was just happenstance that the cultists placed too much faith in. While the Black Goat and its "gifts" are almost definitely real, assuming it's that giant silhouette that Mae chats up, its attitude doesn't jive at all with how the cultists describe it - it talks about "little creatures" who come to it begging for answers but don't listen, insists that the only thing in the universe is the "menacing existence" of meaningless atoms, and alludes to "pulling the tear shut," which suggests it's thinking about retreating to wherever it came from and abandoning the cult entirely. That's a pretty sharp departure from the cult saying that the Black Goat goes "I'm hungry, throw people down the hole to make your economy show good numbers and not bad ones."

If that metaphor holds up, then the Cult of the Black Goat consists of a bunch of conservative, self-centered old men sacrificing the community's poor and disadvantaged in order to benefit a system that they believe they control directly but is actually far outside of their scope or willingness to comprehend. Kind of on-the-nose, but I appreciate the metaphor.

e: also those city council jag-offs were absolutely cultists and I'm glad they're dead

I think the silhouette Mae talks to in the dream is meant to be one of the old forest gods - the "present and uncaring" type of God mentioned by the weird teens - and the Black Goat is the incomprehensible darkness she encounters after falling in the spring.

Ultimately though, it doesn't really change anything - given the emphasis on pattern seeking and the desire to believe life is controllable the game discusses, it definitely seems like the cultists latched on to the first thing they could convince themselves would help, and the actual existence/benefits of those things is kinda irrelevant.

How many scenes are there for Gregg/Bea? My first playthrough I went Bea, Gregg, Bea, Bea, and I'm wondering if I'll have seen all the scenes by going Gregg, Bea, Gregg, Gregg, or if the hangouts just go in order and there's a fourth Bea scene after proximity that you'll only see if you hang out exclusively with her.

Also, my personal interpretation of choice for the ending is mine gas-induced hallucinations. Plenty of holes in this theory (how did the cultist get through the fence, how is the Borowskis' bird still alive, etc.) but it helps me sleep at night so it's what I've chosen to believe.

I did mac and cheese, green beans, biscuits, Shakey Bakey, and ground beef, and got an "alright" result but no achievement; not sure if that's because it wasn't a "good" result or just because I played before the patch that fixed most of the achievements. There was even dialog pointing out that it was basically a pile of carbs and ground beef and you can't really go wrong with it, even if it's not great.

I hear that the good result involves pork chops, potatoes (not mashed), green beans, and Shakey Bakey. Not sure if you need one more thing as well or not, since you can add another as far as I'm aware, but, yeah.

And yeah, that's one of several moments where I was desperately trying to make Mae not be an oblivious jackass and couldn't. Oh Mae.

aNYWAY,
tHAT'S REALLY ALL THERE IS,
tO REPORT ON THE SUBJECT,
oF ME GETTING HURT,

This game was really good!

As other people have said, I found the whole topic of homecoming, dropping out of school, the lack of opportunity in small towns and the alienation of old friends and family as people go their separate ways really familiar and well-done. It's been five years since I moved away from a small hometown myself and while I haven't dropped out have certainly struggled at times and thought about what'd happen if I did. I can't really tell if there being a supernatural cause behind Mae's problems weakens or strengthens the story, since it externalizes a lot of those relatable issues, but on the other hand it's also satisfying as a player to help someone overcome a manifestation of their problems (even if it's by accidentally collapsing a mountain on top of them).

Things worked out pretty well plot-wise, although I kinda wish they'd leaned harder on the supernatural stuff and the investigation, maybe spun out the final conflict with the cult a little more. Basically as soon as the severed arm showed up I knew the game wasn't going to be just a story about relationships and introspection but it took until Halloween for the ball to really get rolling and I was hoping for a little more of a conscious effort to take down the cult rather than accidentally sealing them in. Finding out who they were and even discovering some of the townfolk you've met were members (I kept expecting someone to be missing) would've given more punch, and I was hoping for a callback to the big Cat God with Mae "closing the tear" by blocking up the sacrifice pit. I even thought the baseball bat sequences were some kind of prep-work for a combat finale where you actually fight the cultists.

Really though I'm just pathetically grateful they actually gave the story a proper ending at all, so many games these days in the artsy-adventure mould go for something abrupt and ~thematic~ but they rightly recognized the importance of the characters and relationships and saw the whole thing through to the end. I was ready to be so annoyed like four times over the course of the ending whenever I thought they were about to cut to black and credits, like Mae giving herself up to the cultist, stressing about whether they were going to stick the landing almost kept me from actually enjoying it!

Last thing I'll say is I kind of wish some of the decisions were better signposted to signal which ones were going to advance the plot and which ones are optional side-stuff. I think I missed out on one chance to hang out with Germ for example because I thought if I hung out with him I wouldn't get to with Gregg or Bea that day, and some of Gregg's stuff like light-smashing was apparently a freebie as well. I understand the challenge the devs had there though since being too heavy-handed in the dialogue can spoil immersion a bit.

Oh wait, one more thing - did anyone else do the historical society and when you go down the fire escape, end up back at the top again? I went down the fire escape, jumped down, then things went dark and suddenly I was back at the top. I can't tell if it's supposed to be a deliberate time loop or a bug.
