Long James Harden SI feature, confirms what we all already knew

quote:

“I’m not worried about anything but hooping,” says Harden, 27, “and that may be why I’m having this kind of success.” The process of untangling a crowded life began a year ago, when he and Khloé broke up after an eight-month romance, which began with a meeting at Kanye West’s basketball-themed birthday party at Staples Center in June. Harden does not reference Khloé but reflects on the tabloid apparatus that accompanies her. “I didn’t like all the attention,” he says. “I feel like it was for no reason. I wasn’t getting anything out of it except my name out there and my face out there, and I don’t need that. It wasn’t uncomfortable, but it wasn’t me. I don’t need pictures of myself when I’m driving my car. Who cares? What shoes am I wearing? Who cares? Where am I eating? Who cares? It was unnecessary stuff that I think trickled down to my teammates. I had to eliminate that.”

oh yeah and THIS

quote:

The Rockets knew they’d be panned for supposedly neglecting their D, but they were lining up behind their Beard. “Let’s not put a boat anchor on Secretariat,” Morey concluded, during a staff meeting at the end of the search. “Let’s double down.”

¡Hola SEA!

Sooooooooooo on to the wild speculation. Let's say Durant is out a good while - not even next season a while, but say, misses 1-2 rounds of the playoffs. Do the Warriors lose the 1st seed? If so, they go from an easy series against Denver (probably) to one of OKC, LAC, Utah, or Memphis - any of whom pose major challenges for what amounts to last year's team without 2/6 of their top players by minutes.

If Durant is out for round 1, the Mavs beat them as the 8 seed and Dirk ascends into heaven.

if durant is out for a while then the seed is definitely vulnerable.

i think the spurs play the warriors like 3 more times this season; those games are gonna be way more important than the spurs OR the warriors want late season games to be.

would be unbelievable basketball narrative for the thunder to face the durant-less warriors in the first round and knock them out, though.

gotta love the nba. anything can happen, even when we've all been assured that last season and this season's conclusions were inevitable.

the basketball gods say otherwise.

side note: if the spurs do clinch the number one seed, does that make kawhi, the only all-star on the team, the MVP? would be pretty hard pass him up under those circumstances.

They are 4 games up on the Spurs right now so they would still have a good shot to hold on to the top spot but you never know. That bench is awful. If Durant is out for the year, then Draymond better be ready to play 48 minutes a game in the playoffs.

Their bench would basically just be like Livingston, McGee, and then like Ian Clark at that point.

My only experience with Valparaiso was seeing Eyehategod play a set there last year. The only reason I was there was because they can't cross the border to Canada and me and some buddies thought it would be a fun road trip to go down for a weekend and see back to back shows in Indianapolis and Valparaiso.

The bouncer had meth mouth and didn't believe that the tickets on our cell phone were real and insisted that we have printed paper tickets (that were the same thing just printed off). The show was in a warehouse with no liquor license that had a temporary permit to sell bottles from six packs upstairs. There were about twenty people there.

We stayed nearby in Portage. We took an Uber from the show to a bar across the street from our motel called Mark O's. When we told our fifty year old driver the destination he said "Mark O's? That place is my loving jam! You guys getting some pussy tonight?"

Basically where I'm going with this is that if Valparaiso is nice compared to Gary and East Chicago, those places must be seriously hosed.

This is a good Valpo story and I am glad you got to experience that AND Portage. East Chicago and Gary don't have that charm, you just get shanked.

only 3 losses behind and they play each other 3 more times which equate to pretty big swings in tight races if i remember correctly.

pretty different. iguadala isn't playing nearly as well, no harrison barnes (obviously) which means their small forward position is pretty bare. worse center to open up the offense/protect the rim, and a considerably worse bench.

we'll see though. its crazy to count them out, but they're definitely not the same team and haven't been playing the same style all season.

They were deeper last year plus always looked better with Bogut, even if he didn't play big minutes. Lots of sharp goons saw the finals turning when Bogut got hurt.

Basically, it's last years team without their starting center, small forward, and a thinner bench.

plus a really good defender if i remember correctly (though i could be wrong). KD has been pretty good defensively but losing that 3/4 rock solid defender hurts their regular lineup and ruins any chance for the SBDS

Also I would be totally down to see Warriors (2) vs Thunder (7) in the first round.

I was gonna ask who the West #8 will be but looking at the Denver roster now, I'm pretty convinced they will hold it. I haven't been able to see them play once all season, but they have some really good depth on that team.

He's already got it locked up because of how far behind the Rockets are.

I don't really expect the Spurs to keep winning like they have been, but I've been thinking that all year. Parker is going to miss some time so maybe they can actually catch the Warriors.

plus they're starting dedmon and bringing pau off the bench to feast.

the last two games with pau back have been great.

i actually expect the spurs offense to improve tremendously with him back. he's not going to put up huge numbers, but he's an excellent passer and can really help facilitate/space the floor. especially since he's shooting 3s like whoa now.

He's mostly just not a shooter now. Seriously he takes like six shots a game and averages like eight points. He exists mostly to be a horrible defensive pest and hit open threes. He's shooting fourty percent on them though so he keeps you honest.

It actually fits pretty well with what the Spurs are doing these days.

not really. doesn't shoot much anymore, but i think his percentages are decent for when he does. not in a slump, just not really used for offense. he's definitely not last year's danny green (though to be fair, he did actually shoot well in the playoffs).

still an amazing defensive specialist though, leads all SGs in blocked shots, if not all guards. perfect for the rockets and the warriors (as perfect as one can be).

the rockets are 6 losses behind the spurs and their offense is incredibly predictable. i don't see them beating the spurs in the playoffs.

but i do see the refs on the rockets side, definitely.

we'll see what happens. spurs are up 2-1 on the season, but they play each other again soon.

In addition to what others have mentioned, this year's edition of Steph Curry is, statistically speaking, a much better match to his '13-'14 version than his '14-'15, and especially '15-'16, version. It's possible that's just to do with the effects of adding Durant, but maybe not.
