I haven't actually tried Doom on Android, but isn't there a port coded by Carmack as a way to learn how to do Android apps?

I don't think he ever released that to the public. He also ported Wolfenstein 3D to iPhone as a way to learn how to do iOS development several years earlier which again I think he didn't release.

Quick question, anybody use the new Wii U Smash Bros GCN controllers on actual GCN/Wii hardware? I feel like that's probably the best option for getting a new GCN controller on paper, but I'm wondering if they have any disadvantages in quality/feel over an OG GCN controller.

They are the same thing, except brand new.

They have a silkscreen of a Smash Bros logo instead of a Gamecube logo, but otherwise are literally the same thing.

They are perfect and probably the last chance you'll ever get to get a brand new GameCube controller for a sensible price

I know someone who bought one and complained the sticks were worn out within 2 years. But they play a whole loving lot of Smash and I don't think their original GameCube controllers lasted that long either with all that use.

Speaking of id games on phone, is there a way to play the old Doom and Wolfenstein RPGs on a PC?

There's j2me emulators, but they're not particularly great and you also need to find the jar files for both games.

I looked for a way to do this and it seems like the only way is to get a Java Emulator. There's this thing: http://www.javaemulator.com/ which works and boots Doom RPG but the buttons don't do anything. The hard part is going to find the .jar files for the games but they mostly seem to be hosted on a bunch of Russian websites. The one .jar I got is from way back when and I don't remember where. It was probably from a Russian website and my machine has been running a Bitcoin miner this whole time.

Wolf3d on IOS is definitely released, its also completely open-source, AND there's a great write-up by some other guy on the codebase: http://fabiensanglard.net/wolf3d/index.php

I believe Doom on iOS is also open-source as well. (still copyrighted obviously)

I feel confident in the preservation of console digital games but there's a bunch of phone stuff we'll probably never see again. And yeah, it's a sea of crap but there's some fun stuff. I don't think Tomena Sanner is available anymore but it looks like there's a WiiWare version I didn't know about.

Games and apps for PDAs are another area where preservation turned out pretty lacking. Lots of stuff flat out isn't available anymore, or is only available as shareware/demo versions with limited features, or where the demo is actually the full version executable but nobody ever cracked the app or made a proper keygen to use with it.

Digital Eclipse is doing a new Capcom collection WHAT COULD IT BE???

PaletteSwappedNinja
Jun 3, 2008

One Nation, Under God.
My first guess would be a SF2 compilation but I can't imagine they'd do both that and Ultra SF2.

It could be MM Legacy 2 but those would be ports rather than emulated games and I don't know if that's in their wheelhouse, unless they do one that's all Game Boy games or something.

It might be the Disney compilation they said they pitched before MMLC... nah.

A Ghosts n Goblins/Gargoyles Quest collection would be rad but I don't see it happening.

I just hope Capcom gives them a decent budget and a real commitment to post-launch support this time.

It would be the NES ones, to capitalize on the emulator work they did for Megaman Legacy Collection

Which would really be the best disney game collection

It would seem like kind of a waste but at the same time it'd make up for the disappointment I felt at the time when the GBA version of Anniversary Collection was cancelled.

Alien vs. Predator, home at last.

Every time Capcom dips into their back catalog, I hope they'll do nice, pretty modern ports of Cyberbots, Armored Warriors, Warzard, Battle Circuit, Tech Romancer, and the other great late-1990s arcade games that no one cares about half as much as they do Trojan or The Speed Rumbler.

Capcom never does this, and I always understand why. But I'm still disappointed.

I would kill for a good Capcom beatem up compilation. Same for Konami, although I imagine the licensing costs would be insane for the Konami one. At least for Capcom you would have Marvel for Punisher and Fox for Alien/Predator.

Sadly most companies are going to piece these out one at a time for :10bux: a pop instead of a doing a nice compilation anymore since they can make more money that way. That also means that lesser known and/or popular titles will get passed over because they won't sell.

It's quite probably down to the voice acting. Japanese VA licensing is apparently pretty atrocious for remakes.

it took him over 90 hours to complete, because you have to learn how to play the piano to finish the entire game

but if you already know how to play piano maybe it's a piece of cake

He does play instruments, he plays with his brother on occasion. I think the problem with Miracle was that you had to pretty much play flawlessly from what I've seen on the stream.

I've actually never heard of this game, The Mexican Runner, nor NESmania before now but I'm absolutely delighted that someone learned the piano as a consequence of playing through every NES game. I would never have expected it.
