I don't think it's that it's straight-faced 4th wall breaking, but the fact that it seems to be the author admitting that "nope, nothing can upset the status quo, I need to keep drawing the same jokes for years."

It's less like Garfield at this point and more like Prince Valiant. That's how slow this is now - I think it used to have better (?) pacing before, or at least had more jokes to pad it out. Now it's slow for slow sake

It goes through phases, I think. Phases where it's slow, plodding, lovely relationship non-progress, and phases where it's just tomo+friends being funny and dumb.

Like, they can still spin this into more progress. But I've zero faith that they will. I like this series, but it's covered every character, character history, and outside relationship that it can at this point. It is totally possible that within the next week Tomo or Jun get a kick in the pants, see the light and victory is achieved. I just don't trust the series to go that route.
