I prefer the approach of places like RPS, Kotaku and Waypoint where there is no score, just a review.

A while ago Eurogamer switched to giving out Essential/Recommended/Avoid and just the review text if the game didn't merit any of those.

I like buy/wait/avoid but it still doesnt capture those games where its a 10 for genre fans and a hard pass for everyone else. The only winning move is not to play

Real hurthling! posted:I like the content of their reviews but i find the scores dont line up very well. When a game is bad they still give it a 3. I have to look but im not sure they've given a 2 or 1 yet at all. I wouldn't be surprised if their scores are somewhat inflated. I think they try for objectivity but they're all really enthusiastic about what they like. And they generally seem to give review duties to reviewers who really like that genre or series, so there's probably a baseline enthusiasm factor boosting the review scores. I think they're an outlet that would benefit from ditching numerical scores entirely. haveblue posted:A while ago Eurogamer switched to giving out Essential/Recommended/Avoid and just the review text if the game didn't merit any of those. Yeah, I'm a fan of that approach. It still leads to basically the same backlash as unfavorable/too favorable review scores (like, the comments on the Horizon review, which is just the text with no recommendation, weren't pretty) but I think it allows for a little more nuance than a numerical score does.

I find it makes me re-read the article and figure out what the score would be, in a good, critical thinking way.

I don't think I've read or cared about a review since I've had good enough internet to just watch videos.
