"First things first: it is unnecessary and impossible to watch Defenders. It is also inadvisable to read about it." "Let's not dance around the issue [Defenders] is bad. No one could doubted that. The question is, how bad? As bad as possible. Worse than you can imagine." "The easiest way to ruin your holiday." "This review has many spoilers, but I honest don't know if it's possible to spoil the movie. There is nothing here, and most of all, nothing unexpected." "Defenders is a dream. Even a day later, it's hard to recall. Not because it's bad, and believe me it's bad, but it's completely and hopelessly empty."

bewbies posted:I am unsure if you can lump Hitler in the same category, but a huge part of Putin's political persona is being this heroic hypermasculine Man's Man (my personal favorite example of this is Putin scoring bunches of goals in hockey games that feature recently retired NHL hall of famers). The idea is basically to tap into the same kind of mentality that everyone tried to activate during the world wars: masculine men are tough and good, so prove your masculinity and join the army! Putin's persona is a little more...nuanced though. It lets him appeal to the large population of disenfranchised/poor/etc young Russian males that today make up the bulk of his non-oligarch support. Basically, he's taking a big group of people who grew up in the anarchy of post-Soviet Russia, and giving them a tough strong mean father figure to latch onto. It also lets him demonstrate Russian Bear Strength and Power against western Imperialists like Obama, because Obama is a pussy academic. edit: however, cyrano, i don't think it's stretching to say that fascism draws on images of purity, idealized male bodies, and health. At least the German kind did, I don't know about, say, the Romanian kind. edit 2: i am perversely grateful to live in this time, since i'm learning so much more about fascism. it's fascinating. That propaganda is straight up terrifying. Hell, I read some of the taglines and go "Hey, I actually agree" (just the ones about renewable energy and not smoking crack, I promise) for a second before the rest of my brain catches up and says "THESE PEOPLE ARE LITERALLY NAZIS." I can totally see how people can get drawn in.

And it's not like once you've absentmindedly nodded at that one you suddenly can't have the thought "uh this 'National Socialism NOW' thing seems kinda fashy" anymore.
