At the height of the Iraq war the Army was taking anybody that could fill a uniform even if there were violent felonies on thier record. Since the draw down they've raised their standards again. I know the confessor said they had no violent felonies but depending on the felonies they may still be denied. This gets harder if they're a woman since they would be restricted in what MOS they could in. Woman are already in combat roles, Military Police are frontline combat now, but they are not allowed in traditional combat roles, Infantry and the like.

The oil industry is struggling in the Dakotas and felons are last on the list to be considered for work. If you're lucky you can find a job at a fast food place but you're going to be paid poo poo and the cost of living is comparatively high.

Just because it is still difficult doesn't mean it's not among the best options for felons out there. Their only realistic option is something with high turnover and unskilled.
