We also have dim opinions on their Viking movie as it denies the historical statehood of Ukraine or something.

I translated some choice excerpts.

"First things first: it is unnecessary and impossible to watch Defenders. It is also inadvisable to read about it."

"Let's not dance around the issue [Defenders] is bad. No one could doubted that. The question is, how bad? As bad as possible. Worse than you can imagine."

"The easiest way to ruin your holiday."

"This review has many spoilers, but I honest don't know if it's possible to spoil the movie. There is nothing here, and most of all, nothing unexpected."

"Defenders is a dream. Even a day later, it's hard to recall. Not because it's bad, and believe me it's bad, but it's completely and hopelessly empty."

I am unsure if you can lump Hitler in the same category, but a huge part of Putin's political persona is being this heroic hypermasculine Man's Man (my personal favorite example of this is Putin scoring bunches of goals in hockey games that feature recently retired NHL hall of famers). The idea is basically to tap into the same kind of mentality that everyone tried to activate during the world wars: masculine men are tough and good, so prove your masculinity and join the army! Putin's persona is a little more...nuanced though. It lets him appeal to the large population of disenfranchised/poor/etc young Russian males that today make up the bulk of his non-oligarch support. Basically, he's taking a big group of people who grew up in the anarchy of post-Soviet Russia, and giving them a tough strong mean father figure to latch onto. It also lets him demonstrate Russian Bear Strength and Power against western Imperialists like Obama, because Obama is a pussy academic.

You see this kind of thing happen a lot of times there's a big unhappy group of young men. National shame, or whatever you want to call it, is a really powerful thing.

edit - here's a good article that explains it better than I did:

This whole masculinity thing is so tied up in Russian politics today that I've actually had to write about it for DoD publications. Like, analyzing the impact of shirtless Putin on the political balance of power in the Baltics. Am serious.

It is also pretty funny how many Alpha/King/grossly insecure young men in the US idolize Putin. The internet is full of such discussions and I love reading it.
putin and i are literally the same exact size. i am five pounds lighter than he is, as of this morning when i weighed myself.

edit: however, cyrano, i don't think it's stretching to say that fascism draws on images of purity, idealized male bodies, and health. At least the German kind did, I don't know about, say, the Romanian kind.

edit 2: i am perversely grateful to live in this time, since i'm learning so much more about fascism. it's fascinating.

The Mote in God's Eye

Italian Navy Posthttps://fi.somethingawful.com/sideimages/r88/82.jpg

  • Amazingly, if the Italians were now down three cruisers, they soon managed to take out two RN cruisers. The Bonaventure was torpedoed and sank by an Italian submarine, and X MAS, the naval frogmen special forces unit, infiltrated Suda bay, sinking the cruiser York.

  • The main job in early 1941 was still convoy escort. The Germans kept pestering the Italians to use warships as transports, which was a lovely idea for several reasons: 1) the amount of poo poo you can pack on a warship's deck is like 1/5th of what a single merchantman could carry; and if it was at all flammable, like fuel, it'd make said warship extremely vulnerable to attack.

  • The British, despite being more or less desperate for convoy escorts themselves, put four modern Destroyers at Malta to hopefully interdict Axis convoys.

  • These attacked an Axis convoy escorted by three Italian destroyers. They picked their time to intercept to coincide with a storm that grounded possible Axis air cover. (The Italian AF was now being supported in this task by the Luftwaffe.)

  • The RN used radar and lovely weather at night to get the drop on the convoy. In the melee, the British Destroyers managed to sink the three destroyers and the four merchant ships - but a sinking Italian destroyer managed to sink one of the RN attackers, who then fled. As the convoy sank in shallow water, the Italians would later manage to procure the codebook out of the sunken RN destroyer.

  • Spring 1941 was mostly convoys, arguing with the Germans to badger the French to let Axis convoys use Tunisian ports, and trying to get the Germans to support taking Malta.

  • The Germans had other ideas: in wake of the British evacuation of Greece that Spring, they decided to take Crete.

FDR would be too. Both him and Hitler were really early at understanding how huge radio was for getting out political messages to the masses.

edit: if you want to see something really funny compare FDR's 1931 campaigning rhetoric about government and the economy to Trump's. You'll piss off both dems and republicans!

Idk the only one of those that isn't extremely obviously Nazi propaganda is the renewable energy one. And it's not like once you've absentmindedly nodded at that one you suddenly can't have the thought "uh this 'National Socialism NOW' thing seems kinda fashy" anymore.
