If you want to easily avoid Nigerians in the various kabukicho's of japan, as you walk past them and they approach all you have to do is put your open palm to the side of your face as if blocking poo poo being thrown at you and they will just back off. When I first lived in Japan in the year 2000, my friends mother belonged to an email group of mothers who believed all Gaijin in Japan were out to rape their daughters, and this was usually fuelled by incidents near Yokohama and Okinawa's bases.

Oh good, Japan talk. I can finally stop lurking. Here are two things about Kabukicho: 1. Outside of going once just to see it as a spectacle, there's not much reason to go unless you want to go to a brothel, host/hostess bar, or an overpriced theme bar. There are better, cheaper restaurants and bars in other parts of town. Just don't bother. Take a quick walk around at night, you're good. 2. From what I have heard, touts are no longer allowed to touch people and are generally less aggressive than they used to be. I mean touts of all things. I remember coming to Japan in high school and a touter in Harajuku selling clothes coming up to me and putting his arm around me. Going to Harajuku/Kabukicho in recent years, they don't do poo poo like that any more. The only time a tout in Kabukicho has touched me was when I was taking my black-out drunk friend home from a show. The tout was a tall Japanese dude with bleached tips, harassing some girl about coming to his host bar. My friend started saying to me "Man I hate that poo poo so much, you know what.." and he turned to the guy and yelled "gently caress YOU!" The tout of course doesn't want to look weak out on the street so he stomps up to us and says "gently caress YOU?!" I just keep walking, steadying my wobbly drunk friend saying "Don't need this poo poo, nope." The dude grabs my wrist, I look down, do that self defense 101 thing where you just twist your hand and push the other persons hand away and say "He's DRUNK, dude" and the tout said something like "He's drunk, huh...." and walks away. That was the second time that night we almost got in a fight with someone because my friend was super hammered. After that I made a policy of NOT being the one to take care of him at the end of the night. Other Kabukicho stories include my dumbass friend who lived in Nagoya coming to Tokyo, looking to get a handy, despite me telling him explicitly not to go to Kabukicho because he will get scammed, going anyway and getting scammed. He spent the $300 or so in yen he had on him just getting into the place (a scheme which someone in the thread already mentioned) then when he had to pick a girl (in a different location, of course) he had no money except $40 American. Some huge yakuza dude walks up, asks what the trouble is, sees he only has dollars, kindly says "Oh well we can take that, no problem." The girl he picked was pissed and leads him to a dirty room with a bed and shower, jerks him off angrily the whole time saying "Hurry up! Come on! Cum!" He comes back to my apartment later that night drunk and upset about the whole thing. I just sit there and listen to his story, shaking my head calling him a dumbass.

Also I want to hear about LimburgLimbo's experiences in meeting Jake Adelstein. I have also heard he is full of poo poo. He seems to be the only American "expert" available whenever American TV is making a documentary or show about Japan, so you see his dorky face all the time.

Nothing crazy, he was just at a dinner thing and we talked a bit, seen him around elsewhere. I didn't exactly grill him on all his poo poo. He's around Tokyo all the time and you'll run across him every once in a while depending on who your friends are, as is the nature of Japan's small international community. He tends to hang around with a lot of young girls from his alma mater, who are "interns" and poo poo but it seems a bit creepy at times. He apparently used to hire bodyguards when he went to public places or conventions or poo poo to hold up the highly dubious story that the yakuza had it out for him.

This Kabukicho incident was actually last month. He lives in New York now and was visiting for work stuff. I saw Adelstein once in Shimokitazawa. I liked his book and was interested in that sort of thing. After following his twitter and instagram and reading about the dubiousness of his writings, I unfollowed his poo poo. The dude just rubbed me the wrong way in general. And yeah, his instagram was a lot of his "interns" who were almost uniformly blonde women in their early 20s.

Not married, AFAIK. Source: friend married the founder of a anti-human-trafficking NGO and he was invited to the reception. They didn't given him a +1 because, paraphrasing, they didn't want him bringing a bimbo. He didn't show. No idea about the bitcat.
