That's why I said a few weeks ago that I'd be curious to see a progressive Christian candidate take on the conservative Christian Right, because they'd be able to argue from a position of knowledge and belief how un-Christian the Right's positions are. I've definitely referenced it before, but it's beautifully encapsulated by that Jeesuz-Jesus illustration. There are more left wing Catholics out there than you'd expect though they don't really seem to hold a lot of electoral sway. The best we've seen in terms of a non right wing Christian candidate recently is, ugh, Tim Kaine.

I remember seeing some theory floating around that American Christians hate Muslims so much, because devout faith makes them feel like frauds. Christianity has become, maybe going to church on Sundays, definitely holidays, and the rest of the time, whatever, maybe shout you're a good Christian if someone challenges your opinion on something. Interesting though, it's not the entirety of it, but I do believe that could be a key component.

Theoretically you can be a Christian progressive, but why would you want to be? I don't at all understand religious tribalism. Jingoist infighting between sects of faith is one of the biggest mistakes the human race has made because it's all incomprehensibly stupid bullshit that has somehow managed to utterly cripple our movement forwards by distracting us with nonsense warfare and petty, nation-destroying slapfights.

Hey, if we do a whip round and collect a cool 1/4 million pounds then we can get Tony Blair to come and lecture us on the finer points of faith, globalisation, being a middle east envoy, flip-flopping between various sects of Christianity, giving post-massacre damage-limitation advice, needing a quarter million a year of tax-payer money for private security, and being the toadiest of war criminals.

George Bush is a Ivy League educated Yankee that somehow managed to create the illusion that he was a simple Southern rancher/Washington Outsider not the closest thing America has to nobility. So PR is obviously his strong side. He only seems alright due to nostalgia and to a much more overtly evil republican being on the throne.
