Carolla is worse now by several orders of magnitude. Dr. Drew is a bit weird but I thought it was kind of unfair recently that he got fired over questioning whether or not Hillary was receiving the best possible medical care based on her public medical records. Wouldn't remaining silent about that be "doing harm" and a violation of his professional oath? Makes you think.

Professional associations probably discourage members from getting involved in a highly sensitive issue in a public and self aggrandizing manner. Even on the off chance that she isn't better taken care of than 99.9Г percent of Americans all he ended up doing was fanning conspiracy theories

NomChompsky
Sep 17, 2008

I guess he might have ended up fanning conspiracy theories, but having listened to what he said and having a family member who has a clotting disorder I was probably a bit more understanding toward what he was saying. Because all he really said was that her history suggests a clotting disorder and that she's on a pretty old fashioned medication for such a problem (which is totally treatable and not something to worry about so long as you're on the right meds).

Adam used to be funny as poo poo

A theme I remember coming up a lot on old loveline was some kid would call in who was considering piercing their penis, clit, tongue or nipples and wanted to know what the risks were. They always seemed to be expecting Drew's doctorly reassurance that yes it's risky but go ahead. What they would get instead was intense questioning (and gambling) to get to the bottom of what kind of abuse the caller must have endured in early childhood that broke their brain and made them think walking around with a steel post through the peckeroo was an a good idea.

One night this guy called in with a harrowing cautionary tale of how he had his entire penis and testicles amputated as a result of gangrene from infected piercings. The gruesome medical details didn't come off as bogus. As I recall Adam was out of the studio that night so the call took on this dead serious tone as Dr. Drew (a passionate, passionate man) addressed the the young listeners imploring them to not pierce their genitals, that your body does not like foreign objects embedded in its delicate tissues and to seek therapy for whatever trauma is leading you to think self mutilation is cool.

Dr Drew always seemed to have an even keel and professional manner with even the more bizarre callers. Even his foray into reality tv still focused less on spectacle (that he could control) and more on highlighting the seriousness of drug misuse.

Did he do anything else untoward or was it just that one time he dared question a powerful politician's story that tarnished his image?

It wasn't even her story. She released her medical records to the public and he said "A lot of these signs suggest she has some disorder or another that causes her blood to coagulate more easily and she's receiving very old school treatment for it." Now I am not a doctor, but I have some familiarity with blood clotting disorders because I care for my grandma and she has one, and I take her to her doctor appointments and I ask lots of questions so that I can break it down for her. Dr. Drew said Hillary was on coumadin, which my grandma used to be on. It's an old drug that basically makes it so you have to come in and get regular blood tests to make sure you are at therapeutic levels of the meds all the time, and you have to avoid certain foods high in vitamin K because they'll adversely affect the ability of the drug to work.

They moved her as soon as they could to one of the new drugs, pradaxa, which is a protein inhibitor and doesn't do the vitamin K stuff. So you can eat what you want, with the added benefit of just taking the drug as directed will keep you at therapeutic levels at all times, so no need to go in every week or two to get a test done to see if it's working. The downside to drugs like that and xarelto and poo poo is that they don't yet have an antidote to the drug so if you have an accident and are bleeding, they have to basically give you transfusions until the drug wears off in 24 hours, whereas with Coumadin or the other treatments they can just give you a shot and it'll nix the medication. Maybe because of her balance issues and equilibrium problems, they don't want Hillary on some of the new drugs because she has an increased chance of bleeding from a fall or something like that. I don't know. They could have very good reasons, or she could just have an old fashioned doctor. Nevertheless, the fact that Drew got shredded and fired because he merely questioned whether or not she was receiving the best possible care is horse poo poo.

what got dr drew fired was the fact that he was using his position of influence as a medical professional to affect the outcome of an election when his political affiliations are very clearly stated. He knew exactly what questioning her health was going to do, he's not stupid.

he's also an addiction medicine specialist, not a cardiologist. And without access to her medical records or team of physicians, he wouldn't have been qualified to make that assessment even if he was a cardiologist.
