i'm sure this has been discussed to death, but what was the logic behind paying some rando to reinvent the wheel from first principles, rather than pay for customization of a proven solution?

who knows. lowtax has seemingly always been of the thought that SA is way too much of a special-snowflake for ANYTHING off the shelf, regardless of what is task needs to be accomplished. why was he working on having a custom kickstarter thing instead of just, oh i don't know, using kickstarter or gofundme or whatever other crowdfunding/fundraising sites out there?

I assume he wants to tie it in to the forums something. Like with the dumb yellow custom title thing.

i'm still wondering how someone claiming they're going to write a custom bb solution for thousands of users, from scratch in less than a year, by themselves was met with anything but heartly lols and a heap of scorn.

reading the early threads where they were outlining their timeline pretty clearly made the case that they have no concept of project management timelines

so I guess you haven't been in this biz long enough to see a manager/founder who's anxious about vendor lock in and also naive about software estimation

people seriously underestimate how much work and cost it is to write and maintain software. giving a big wad of cash to a third party is often a much better solution.

my estimate is that a complete, from scratch forum solution will run you around a million dollars and take a year to complete. and then you need to pay for someone that knows how to maintain it and keep it secure and backed up.

for SA's current volume and online storage needs (and considering that those #s are going to go down) i think you can get a forum built that would meet its needs for at most half that, and like somewhere in the 100-300k range. maintenance will kill you, and wherever possible they should lean on well-maintained libraries, frameworks, and services. even then, you'd really need someone who cared enough and knew enough to keep up with what actually mattered, which is definitely not lowtax.

front end developer, back end developer, database/cache developer, and a sysadmin, all full time. 4 people for a year will burn through a million easily. I'm no expert in web projects so I am probably naively underestimating.
