The Bell Curve came out in 1994? Man, for some reason I always thought it was one of those cottage industry racism books from like late 19th century when dudes would publish poo poo saying negroids are lower on the "great chain of being." Which reminds me that I took an Anthropology class where one of the textbooks was titled "From Savage to Negro." Four weeks into the class one dude (the same dude who was also surprised to learn blacks and whites could produce viable offspring) stands up and asks the teacher, who was a cool, upbeat African dude, "So which is better? Savage or negro?" "I don't know, you tell me!" Then the kid started thinking and sat down and I think the professor was pretty happy with the fact that he was at least thinking about it.

Legitimate question, whats wrong with the Bell curve? I never read it but got taught about it briefly in school and from what I remember it mostly stated that IQ is measurable and a combination of genetics and environment, which seems fairly uncontroversial?

yeah it says genetics play a role as in "see graph, black people dum", not "genetics plays a role because your mother/homeschool teacher got knocked up by your uncle/brother and the result was mentally retarded" so it is controversial. Short of a genetic disorder its all about environment, africans/asian/europeans are genetically and neurologically identical if they're healthy, but the bell curve asserts that not only is an IQ test score a scientific measure of intelligence (it isn't) but that those three groups occupy distinct strata of intelligence because of genetic differences (they don't).

The actual book The Bell Curve takes it a step further and tries to argue that your IQ is predictive of your station in life and uses the descriptor "cognitive elite," and doesn't seem to understand the cause/effect relationship between IQ and environment, and also claims that "innate intelligence" is a dungeons-and-dragons style racial stat that is different between different ethnicities
