There was a study done 2 years ago that showed that male nurses make, on average, $5000 per year more than female nurses. This is in a profession that has a ratio of 10:1 women to men. When the study was written up in the ANA magazine, one of my male co-workers (we are nurses) said that it was probably wrong because he knows female nurses that make more than he does. He refused to believe that this study of more than 87,000 nurses was accurate. He kept coming up with excuses, like that men were more likely to go in to the higher paying specialties (this was accounted for in the study) and that women took more time off for kids and pregnancy (ugh).
