Wow the Pro Controller is totally worth it. It blew my mind last night. I was playing on the tv with the pro and it felt so complete. Like this a full fledged system, it didn't feel like a gimmick.

The controller itself is great, controls like a dream, has good weight to it. I don't think I could go back to using the grip. It didn't feel cramped when I first used it, but now it just feels so tiny. They joysticks just don't handle the same as the pro.

Played on the tv with it for about an hour, then my girlfriend and I decided to watch something. We both wanted to keep playing games (she was on Sims4) but have on some background entertainment.

Just set the pro down, grabbed the Switch and continued on in portable mode. Easy as pie.

I know people might not have the scratch or the ability to find a Pro right away but it is highly recommend. It really elevates the system as a whole.

The Gamecube also was sold at a loss when they cut its price to $99.

I didn't mean the grip felt like a gimmick. I meant that ability to switch between console and portable is something that works and is cool. I guess I'm having a tough time coming to terms with the fact that this is how I can play games now.

Except the Switch has already been torn down and one can see the component cost. Now, obviously this doesn't take into Design/Engineering costs and manufacturing (Of which the manufacturing costs are minimal due to where they are being mass produced) but Nintendo * Does * have a clear objective in mind. Sell Hardware at a good profit until they have an install base and hopefully 3rd party picks it up and they can drop the cost (Still making money as component costs have come down) and recoup that on licensing.

The gamecube also didn't drop in price in for two years, and the only reason why they lost money was a result of overproduction, of their own doing.

quote:

With sales sagging and millions of unsold consoles in stock, Nintendo halted GameCube production for the first nine months of 2003 to reduce surplus units.[73] Sales rebounded slightly after a price drop to US$99.99 on September 24, 2003

Had they not overproduced they wouldn't have lost money. And has no bearing on price drops with technology production costs lowered.

Either way, the Switch makes, at a minimum, $75 per console sold - and that isn't counting the 2.0 margin on the accessories.

Now, I don't blame Nintendo for doing this. They have to at this point to stay profitable because their 3rd party licensing revenue is drat near non-existent.

Does it feel quality? Is it heavier than the ps4 controller? It doesnt feel like a $20 Logitech PC gamepad or a crappy see thru neon green madcatz xbox 360 controller does it?

I'm not saying the Switch isn't sold at profit. It obviously is. They have said as much. But not all Nintendo consoles are sold at a profit. Gamers think no Nintendo consoles are sold for loss and that all Sony and Microsoft consoles are, but neither is true.

The Hori doesn't cause overheating, but the natural heat of the console makes the deluxe Hori protector bubble and peel. Funnily enough the cheap Hori screen protector doesn't have the same problem

I'm using the $10 Hori one and got a perfect application for the first time in my life, no bubbles, no dust under the thing. Seems perfectly clear. My only problem with it is fingerprints seem a lot more visible on it than on the regular screen.

Let me tell you about true luxury.

The Switch scratches an interesting niche for me. My last console was a Wii and I have a top end PC with 250+ game library on Steam but wanted something for casual enjoyment versus the kind of devouring and lengthy time I spent on PC. When someone asked a page or two ago "what do you do after Zelda" I thought "I don't plan to have Zelda or has been heroes or setsuna finished before a new set of games comes out." My friend actually told me people are racing to finish Zelda on Twitch and my first immediate thought was "someone is doing the Switch wrong." In a lot of ways this is a luxury system for a different kind of use than then xbox or PlayStation. Whether that is a thing people accept will be interesting to see over the next year but you already see the clash over non-game media content availability and demands (entitlement) for as many services as can be crammed onto it.

I picked up the Pro Controller at launch (luckily the best buy i was in got like 70 of them) and I REALLY like it. I have a PS4 and XBONE and I'd put it above the PS4 and below Xbox, even though they are all similar in that they are high quality. I like that it comes with a rechargable battery as well. It definitely does make swapping to portable and home mode completely seamless.

FYI and a word of warning. You cannot transfer or back up your save files. So if your switch goes? So do your saves.

quote:

Nintendo confirmed a new Switch ‘feature’ that has some gamers furious

"Nintendo has confirmed in the Nintendo Switch FAQ on its website that game save data cannot be transferred between systems. Period. Full stop. “On Nintendo Switch, game save data is stored on the console’s System Memory,” the website says. “This will not change whether downloadable software or software from a game card is being played.”

The FAQ continues, “Game save data cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card.” And as a nice little added jab, the site notes that if your internal store fills up and you no longer have any space to save game data, your only option will be to free up space using this procedure — you won’t be able to store any save data on a microSD card."

You also cannot have save files on anything but internal system memory.

If you delete digital games, it keeps the save data. You can also "archive" games (not entirely sure what the difference there is). I do hope that they have cloud saves because it would suck if you lose or break your Switch or something. but I would not expect them within the month.

Initially it was a bit jarring and I couldn't get used to it but it "clicked" last night when playing Zelda for a couple hours. Being able to wrap your fingers around where SR and SL are really, really helps and makes them super easy to hold. Played with my hands under a blanket for a couple hours and ran into no syncing issues AND the battery on the joycons barely depleted.

Archive keeps the game on your home screen (so you can redownload without finding it in the eShop) and keeps your save data. I thought delete didn't keep your save data but guess I'm wrong.

Not that weight has much to do with quality, but yes it's definitely heavier than the PS4 controller. It feels great, probably tied with the 360 controller as my favorite console controller. I've only experienced the rumble in Zelda and that is kind of poo poo, but I don't care about rumble anyways. The only thing that bothers me about it has no headphone jack.

Partially related to this... over the weekend I had to play my Switch on a monitor that only had VGA. So I bought an HDMI to VGA adapter, but it didn't split out the audio. I figured the headphone jack on the switch itself was worth a shot - and it works! So, if you have headphones with a long enough cable, you can actually use the headphone jack when in TV mode.

Yea, just about everything about it is really good. My only complaint is the face buttons feel a little chunky, but that's minor. I already like it more than the Dualshock4. I thought the Wii U Pro controller got a fair deal more praise than it deserved while still being generally good, but the Switch Pro controller is actually great.

:stare: Dang, I know they shot the moon with accessory costs but that's still a lot cheaper than I expected to see this early.

Switch is dank, today is gonna be the first day I'll have to really sit down and play Zelda for more than a couple hours, but I've already played it enough that I'm totally happy with the console even without Zelda (which is also dank). Fri and Sat I brought my Switch in the carrying case to work and played it a bit on break. I like how Zelda is open-ended enough that you can play for just like 20 min~ or so and actually feel like you accomplished something. I took the whole thing, dock and all over to a friends place on Saturday night and ended up downloading fast RMX just to have something multiplayer and was actually kinda surprised that single joycon play wasn't so bad afterall. I passed them around the room and never had any trouble with desync or anything. We had some drinks and crashed our rocket cars into the siderails for a couple hours, it was fun :)

I'm sold on getting a second set of joycons over a pro controller now, the con-grip feels fine after you adjust, desyncing wasn't an issue (for me at least), and the right joycon's stick placement isn't bad at all. The joycons are too small for placement to really matter, it's not like you're gripping its sides so much as holding it loosely in your fingers. So yeah, no regrets

There's also an early upgrade to the Sheikah Slate that will let you set your radar for items/enemies/resources you've identified with it. Haven't messed with it yet but you can add multiple types of arrows to the catalog so presumably it will guide you to them?
