There was an awkward neo-Legalism group in China (basically a version of Dork Enlightenment where they are using dead, bad philosophies to advocate worse modern ones) that had a whole segment on homosexuality. Basically it boiled down to lesbian behavior increases yin (which is good for the yang) but gay behavior depletes yang (which is bad, period). It was funny because it was such a convoluted male fantasy trying so so hard to be real philosophy. A small tectonic shift in the "Gamergate" phenomenon. I can't find them in Chinese or in translation. Say what you will about Xi, at least he scrubbed that from the internet. (USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)

Wasn't Plato's Cave in a large part about encouraging thinking in terms of pure mathematics, which is better than the lowly applied mathematics, which in turn is better than being uneducated? Plato's geometry being the polar opposite of lol kek frog thought, at least according to the highly accurate philosophical spectrum of Planescape.

Cave is a metaphor in book 7 i think of The Republic, is closely connected to the Sun and Line metaphors and the form of The Good, and is ultimately part of Plato's jerking off about how cool it would be if philosopher kings ran everything aka. the theme of The Republic. I don't remember any geometry stuff being involved at all? The funny thing about that particular picture is that they seem to be forgetting the rest of the metaphor, where they'd turn out to actually just be useless pieces of poo poo because they're not going back into the cave to rescue others.

Maybe I'm getting him confused with some of the other Classicals who thought that empirical observation and changing your theories was for scrubs compared to ideal thought, but he did love his Forms.

Guavanaut posted:I was sure there was some mathematical metaphor there though, like you can use applied math to measure stuff and that's okay, but what's really cool is when you do pure math which isn't grounded in physical objects, and in the same way you can be a pleb concerned chiefly about physical things, or you can live in the world of the purely philosophical and Truth and Beauty and be all day because your There's stuff like it in there, but it's less drastic than you remember it. Plato distinguishes (pure) mathematics from what he calls "logistics", i.e. calculations. The latter are useful for commerce and warfare and all sorts of practical stuff, but pure arithmetic deals with higher truths and is therefore better. The background here is that in Athenian society, being a free citizen was not purely something that, once you had it, you had it made, but something you had to actively work on. Certain activities were stereotypically slave's work, so distinguished citizens had to take care not to be seen doing those activities, or their citizenship might be called into question down the line. Unfortunately calculations were part of slave work, since market stalls were typically run by slaves. This had the side effect that most Athenian citizens were pretty poo poo at math. pictured: Diogenes presenting Plato with a human.
