If so, Benning could retain 100% of one Sedin's deal but trade them both.

I doubt this is possible but who knows what loopholes the CBA has.

but you could have one team retain 50% and another team retain 50% on top of that, though you couldn't take it further because a player can only have salary retained by up to two teams

i have a hard time imagining how such a scenario would happen without everybody involved getting smacked down for their obvious collusion but i guess it's technically possible

Is the second retention applied to the principle or the balance?

Like player x has a cap hit of 1 mil. Team a trades him to team b and retains 50, making team b's cap hit .5 mil. When team B trades him to team c and retains 50% is teams c's hit .25 mil or 0?

If it's the latter, can this sort of deal go down in a 3-way trade or does it need to be two separate deals?

i don't know to be honest, i'm guessing it's the balance because two teams giving a third team a player literally for free sounds like too big of an oversight even for the nhl. i'd assume it also needs to be two separate deals, though it could probably effectively be a three way deal - the penguins are actually paying less than half of mark streit's salary because philadelphia retained 4.7% before sending him to tampa bay, and tampa retained 50% of the remainder, and while it was technically two trades, it could probably be looked at as effectively a three way deal as the speed with which streit was sent to pittsburgh would make it seem likely a deal was in place before streit was even traded to tampa.

How often do you even get fair value for a franchise player when you trade them in their prime? The Kovalchuk, Luongo (Florida->Van), Thornton, Hall, and Subban deals were bad to terrible. Even the Kessel trade was pretty poor value.

You have to go back to like the Nieuwendyk for Iginla or Clark for Sundin deals for something decent.

The Nash trade at one point was rock bottom as a CBJ fan (talking loyalty), but he pulled in Dubinsky (cornerstone player on the team), Anisimov (played well here, later flipped for perhaps a better player in Saad), Erixon, and a 1st.

Johansen for Jones was a good trade as well, at least on the Columbus side.

e- I keep thinking the CBJ took Dano (who played well in Columbus) with the NYR's 1st, but it was Rychel.

Subban was not going for a Larsson. Not without some major pieces as well.
Bergevin may have made a colossal blunder, and one that has tanked his popularity in Montreal to "you'd better win the loving cup you hack" levels, but I genuinely believe the only reason he traded PK was because the Nashville GM came to him and said "PK for Shea?".

Firstly, the best (?worst?) the nucks can do is 3rd last - the Canucks straight up aren't losing enough to get close to the Yotes and the Avs started tanking like 3 games in.
Secondly, Vegas is going to add a complication. I think they get a weighted lottery chance as if they came third last?
Finally, this draft, in general, is pretty poo poo according to most people who actually bother to watch 15 year olds play hockey.

Enjoy the game. Cheer for the Canucks.
This is literally the worst year in a decade to be bad, but to have not learned that until the deadline. And besides, if the Canucks do decide to do a total rebuild it's not like you're going to have a lot of reasons to be happy next year.
