This was a solid episode. It was funny, heart warming, adventurous, I felt like we had a bit of solidity to the world building, and the headmistress got some good moments. I didn't expect that twist from the Pirate guy, and I liked how the headmistress was surprisingly nonchalant about seeing her deadbeat dad again. LWA seems to have something similar to the Typemoon Universe except to a lesser extent when it comes to magic; you have socio-economic forces grinding down the practicality of magic to the point that it's mostly running off of its fumes, the allure of magic, and the sense of wonder and specialty it enjoys keeping it going. The Communist Manifesto describes the process of capitalism grinding down the once sacrosanct professions down to a T and Andrew's dad presumably being some sort of rich mogul seems like an excellent stand in for the forces of inevitability. What magic is left with, is something comparable to the specialist antique craftsman, and Akko will blaze a trail to find Magic's new and proper place in the modern world.

After this ep, I really want a focus episode on Professor Finneran, since so far she just seems like a huge jerk, and I'm curious as to what makes her tick and why she doesn't like Ursula or Akko.

I also liked that even Sucy was visibly shocked by the ghosts

I'm definitely expecting an episode at least somewhat focused on her. This is a two-cours series so there's more than enough time to give some focus to the secondary cast.

Why aren't people talking about this show more, anyways? People talk on and on about slice of life shows and this has way more going on.

C-SPAN Caller posted:Why aren't people talking about this show more, anyways? People talk on and on about slice of life shows and this has way more going on. Because it's wholesome, non-controversial fun in which the plot hasn't really kicked in yet, so there's not much to discuss beyond "It's good", and even then we've got 17 pages.

In this episode of 'Why children should not be given godlike magical powers.' Akko kills a bunch of prominent Tory supporters off-screen. Though I'm happy she's getting better at the whole magic thing. Also, *cough* should the bee not be called a wasp since it stung multiple people without dying? She didn't gently caress up the transformation spell. She's also good on her feet, all things considered when she was chasing the bee. She didn't even gently caress up the buffet table when she landed on it. I'd imagine if there were conventional athletics at Luna Nova, that'd one of the only things she excels in. I think "Cupid's Arrow Wasp" would be a really good localization from whatever the Japanese name is. It also looks more like a wasp than a bee.

Frank being into Lotte, the girls' frilly Cinderella dresses, and that "Eeep!" sound that Akko made everytime someone fell in fake-love with her. The scene at the fountain was really good too. Somebody - probably Yoshinari - you can tell, really loves making Akko move. It was really dynamically animated! EDIT: Also, Andrew reading Orwell's 1984. That was pretty good! I don't really like trite love potion stories but I do have a fondness for "Love potion turns out to had never worked all along because those feelings were real." And it made me happy they vaguely went that direction. I sorta feel like Diana getting caught up in a fit of narcissism was a little unfair though, TV Diana isn't really an rear end on screen towards Akko, just short on patience and understandably exasperated with someone she feels is stomping over her own hard work and lineage. The saddest thing this episode though is that is legit jossed the fan theory someone posted I really liked about Akko possibly just being really rich and her parents paid for her way in to Luna Nova. It could still be true that Akko doesn't really understand what "affluence" is compared to an Earl and thinks she's just middle class or whatever but I liked the idea that she was offhandedly loaded. I dunno why but I liked the first Andrew episode and also liked this one; can't put my finger on the different elements in terms of character development, plot, and story beats that come together. Tenebrais posted:I don't get the feeling Trigger really understands the British political scene but they've pretty much nailed it nonetheless. Same, you can tell when Japan gets something just slightly wrong but you can see the effort they put in nonetheless and here I felt like I was in something out of Ghibli. No way, Akko's character screams plucky working-class underdog. It's way more likely that Luna Nova began to act on their waning enrollment far too late, and by the time they opened their doors to those outside the tradition, the rest of the world had lost interest in magic except for one particular die-hard Shiny Chariot fanatic.
