If you hack a bot before combat has started and it's become aggressive you get more options, namely conversion and direct control. The game doesn't explain it for poo poo, it took me most of route B to figure it out.

It's pretty spotty yeah. I think what they had in mind was you would start by hacking a lovely nonaggressive bot or something and use that to get closer to the big ones.

So there's something I don't quite get about a sidequest: When you retreive the memory of a deserted android 11B, if you hide it from 16D she says that she and the 11B were in a relationship and wants to convert to a combat model to avenge her. But if you tell her everything she says that 11B constantly abused her and is glad that she's dead. Isn't it too drastic of a difference between two scenarios? Does narrative change depending on what you choose? Or are all androids hard-wired to hate everyone who tries to desert? Or am I just missing something?

I took it as she was just keeping up appearances, but now that 11B's a traitor she can be openly disgusted about her.

I don't think you can, but I can't boot up the game to fact check for another 9 hours. However there are tons of weapons of the same type, which essentially does the exact same thing.

Well you see if you buy a weapon once... you can't have it equipped twice. Because you only have one.

Even though when you fight you clearly see copies fling across the arena like disposable toys.

You can get a half hour summary of everything here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JE6n2KGbaZ0

It might be kind of confusing however, so you can get expanded summaries from this guy: https://www.youtube.com/user/MrClemps

He's kind of a "Youtube personality" though, so your mileage may vary on that.

Edit: and if you really want to go in-depth on everything without playing the games themselves (and you really don't want to play the Drakengard games), The Dark Id has LPs of all the games: https://lparchive.org/author/The%20Dark%20Id

You can skip Drakengard 2, it's not relevant to anything.

For reference, you can go into this game with zero information and be completely fine. Any information that's important from NieR is included in a lore section. This way might even be reccomended, since if you go into this with NieR knowledge some of the twists are incredibly obvious.

The best way to summarise NieR is to read TDI's LP on the lparchive, imho.
It goes at the pace you want it to because it's text based, covers absolutely everything in the game, points out the flaws where they are and it's pretty funny too.

That last part has me thinking now. Witcher 3 was my first witcher experience, and I just loved the hell out of spending time reading all the encyclopedia stuff. Is it as detailed as that was?

CrashScreen

The thing with original Nier was that there was a game as backstory and a full-game worth of backstory. Automata has all of that and Nier itself, as well as a game-worth of backstory set between them. There's lots of cool things, but they're all background and inform the current events, rather than being mandatory to understand. There's lots of stuff to explore for people interested in the lore.

The Drakengard universe as a whole isn't as indepth as The Witcher's, but Drakengard wasn't a long running and legendary (in its home nation) book series so it's not really comparable.

I haven't played The Witcher 3 myself, but there's nothing in-depth in Automata's lore for the most part. Everything from NieR is only the stuff pertinent to Automata. Honestly, my recommendation is to play Automata, then read The Dark Id's stuff to get everything that led up to Automata. For further reference, only Drakengard and NieR are relevant to Automata, Drakengard 2 isn't relevant to anything and Drakengard 3 seemed to have connections to Automata but didn't in the end. As well, the universe Taro has created isn't contained within the games solely, there's novels, manga, audio dramas, even a stage play. The Dark Id's LPs gather all that material together in one spot for the most part.

Yeah I'd go for The Dark Id's LP instead of Clemps. You see clemps will tell the core of the story but Automata is still designed to be enjoyed by people who didn't play Nier 1. As a result it won't go too deep into Nier 1 so it won't help you as much as you think it will for the experience. It will help, for sure, but you will miss out. A lot.

It's the little details in your journey through Nier 1 that will subtly make a return. Things Clemps will without doubt skip.

So yeah go for the LP. And don't skip the music holy poo poo you see a music link for a section you click that sucker.

Doing this will increase how much you will enjoy Automata by a non-significant amount, imo at least.

Even though her role isn't significant, Accord being active during Automata is still a connection. Even if that's just fixing up weapons (which can still be interpreted as her offering indirect help to YoRHa's crew)

Is she doing that plus supplying weapons? I haven't found her flyer yet. As well, I know Accord is mentioned, but Drakengard 3 ends with a huge question mark over Accord and the Cathedral City, and Automata doesn't answer these questions as Drakengard 3 seemed to imply it would. I can't help but feel Taro knew this as well, given how Automata teases you with information at the end but doesn't actually answer those questions. In any case, the connections implied in Drakengard 3 beyond the brief Accord mention aren't extant in Automata, which is what I meant.

A 15-minute slow walking escort quest that ends in the quest bugging out. Cavia never dies.

Other than that I'm digging the game. There's a lot of very indie game minutia that probably should be culled but the fighting is decent and the music is stellar. Won't even attempt to 100% it until the summer slow game season given that people are talking about it having like 10+ endings, but it's pretty good for what it is.

Unless this escort bugs out again, of course, in which case the controller is going through my monitor.

The sister bot? That one bugged out the once for me.

Don't be perturbed by the ending thing though. Other than 1, the 21 other endings are around 2 or 3 hours of effort if you look them up at a generous estimate.

Do weapons within the same type get special properties at higher levels? Seems the only difference between the different small swords is damage ranges and their stories (same for the other weapon types I've found)

Yeah, they have a special benefit at rank 4. Though these are generally shared amongst the families. e.g Virtuous weapons all get ATK up at 100% hp.
